Melsungen is a cozy half-timbered town in Hesse.

background

Melsungen was first mentioned in a document in 802 as Milisunge. However, there were probably first settlements as early as the 9th - 4th century BC. The city center was largely destroyed in a major fire in the 16th century. As part of the reconstruction, the half-timbered town hall, which is worth seeing, was also built. The figure of the Bartenwetzers is omnipresent in Melsungen and a symbol of the city. On one today Bartenwetzer Bridge called sandstone bridge over the Fulda sharpened in the Middle Ages the lumberjacks removed the beards of their axes. Today you can see a symbolic figure on a turret of the town hall every day at 12 noon and 6 p.m. as a souvenir.

Map of Melsungen

The old town is easy to explore on foot.

  • 1  Visitor parking lot "Am Sand", on the Fulda. There is also a parking area for coaches here. Parking fees: 10 cents every 20 minutes. Parking is free on Saturdays in the afternoon from 1 p.m. and on Sundays all day (07-2010).
  • Bicycle parking. In the northern part of the visitor car park "Am Sand" there are bicycle boxes for vandalism and theft-proof storage of bicycles with luggage. Parking fee: 50 cents for 24 hours, which must be paid at the parking ticket machine. The parking ticket is then deposited from the inside in a window on the box as a receipt (07-2010).

Tourist Attractions

View from the Bartenwetzerbrücke to the old town. The bronze figure on the right is one of the two Bartenwetzer statues that can be found on the sandstone arch bridge built in 1595/96 in just 1 1/4 years. In the Middle Ages, many Melsung people made their living from logging. The lumberjacks sharpened their "beards" (Middle High German term for ax or hatchet) when going to work on the bridge in the morning. The notches of this activity can still be seen today in the soft sandstone of the bridge. The historical Fulda bridge in Melsungen is now appropriately called "Bartenwetzerbrücke". The term "Bartwetzer" is still used today as a nickname for the inhabitants of the city of Melsungen. Incidentally, a symbol of the Bartenwetzer also appears up in the Melsung town hall every day at 12 noon and 6 p.m.
