Tourist Attractions

Felsberg castle ruins
  • 1  Felsburg castle ruins. The ruin sits enthroned on a rugged basalt rock above the old town. The castle chapel is located in the well-preserved curtain wall. Also worth seeing is the keep (called "Butterfassturm"). The tower was built in 1388. The viewing platform can be reached via steep wooden stairs. From the tower you have a beautiful panoramic view of Felsberg and the Ederniederung.Open: The castle complex is only accessible in the summer months on Sundays and public holidays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., guided tours are arranged by the Felsberg Castle Association.Price: Donation appreciated.
Tower of the Heiligenberg castle ruins
  • 2  Heiligenberg castle ruins. The 389 m high mountain is about 3 km east of the city. Today's ruin was built between 1180 and 1186 by the Archbishop of Mainz, Konrad. The Heiligenbergverein, which looks after the ruin, asks for a donation. The donation box can be found in the stairway to the tower. Between 2002 and 2010, the association restored the castle in cooperation with the Hessen Monument Preservation. The association's volunteers put in a whopping 9,130 hours of work. On the spacious tower, copper distance signs make the view clear. There are also coin-operated binoculars (deposit € 1). But even without climbing the tower you have a beautiful panoramic view from the castle. The castle hotel is located just below the castle at the parking lot and invites you to stop for a break.Open: The complex with the tower is open freely accessibleThe tower is closed from the beginning of December to January 6th, as there is a Christmas tree on top of the building during this time.
  • Art circular path - There are 15 works of art along the 3 km long circular route around the mountain cone. The art trail is part of the regional project "ARS NATURA - art on the hiking trail".
    • Directions by car: Leave the nearby A 7 at the Melsungen junction. From here a small access road about 1.5 km long leads to the parking lot in the area of the ruin. If you are coming from the north (from Kassel) it is particularly easy: You can enter the access road directly via the main road. From the parking lot you walk about 500 m with about 40 meters in altitude to the castle.
    • Tips for arriving by bike: The federal road 253 Melsungen - Felsberg should be used as a cyclist absolutely avoid, because the road is very busy without cycle paths (also by many trucks). The best way to do this is to leave your bike in Gensungen (e.g. at the train station) and walk up to the castle, some of which are quite steep roads (almost 200 meters in altitude over a distance of around 2.5 km, see also the map for a hiking suggestion from Gensungen Train station on the side of the Heiligenberg Association).
    • Refreshment possibility: Castle hotel in the area of the parking lot
Panorama: You can scroll the picture horizontally.
Worth seeing: the panoramic view from the Heiligenberg castle ruins. You can see the wide Schwalm-Eder lowland. The Felsberg district of Gesungen is in the center of the picture. To the right of it you can find the core city with the rock castle. The Kellerwald can be seen on the horizon.

Hilgershausen

  • The imposing one 3 Three-step linden tree in Hilgershausen stands about 6 km southeast of the core town of Felsberg. It is believed that the tree was planted around 1640. Before the trees were planted, the square served as the location of the village fountain. In 1740 the linden tree was first mentioned in a document. Today the former dance and court linden tree is protected as a natural monument. A wooden frame supports the protruding branches, which are also forced into the flat shape with this. A shady "square bench" runs around the tree trunk, which invites you to rest, especially on hot days.
    • Directions by car: Turn off the federal highway 253 between Felsberg-Gensungen and the junction on the A 7 in the direction of Beuern. In 1 Beuern then follow the signs to Hilgershausen. The linden tree stands directly on the street "An der Linde" at the confluence of the street "Schulberg" and cannot be missed.
    • Directions by bike: From Felsberg take the signposted cycle route 12 in the direction of Melsungen to Beuern (never use the very busy main road without bike paths). At the exit of Beuern just stay on the road and cycle straight over the hilltop to Hilgershausen.

shop

Felsberg is the northernmost wine-growing community in Germany: on the Böddiger Berg there has been a vineyard managed by a local winemaker since the 1950s. This was followed by a long-term legal dispute with the State of Hesse, which would have preferred to put the unpopular deviator in their place far outside the traditional Hessian wine-growing regions Rheingau and Bergstrasse, but which was thrown out of court with this claim, so that it was forced to recognize the Böddiger Berg as a quality wine-growing region . The wines produced here belong to the Rheingau wine-growing region and are usually sold out a few days after the grape harvest. • Adventure region "Middle Fulda" - The town of Felsberg belongs to this tourist working group, although it is located on the Eder. In Wikivoyage, Felsberg is counted as part of the "Schwalm-Eder-Niederung" region, as this makes more sense (among other things because of the classification in the location database).
