background

To the former explosives factory in Hirschhagen

One of the largest explosives factories from the Nazi era is located north of Hessisch Lichtenau. The area is now an industrial park. Since the plant was not bombed, parts of the plant are still preserved today as ruins. Some buildings have also been rebuilt and are still in use today. The employees (in addition to Germans also forced laborers) had to use explosives for the III. Make rich. More than 100 people were killed in several explosions at the plant. Extensive soil renovations were carried out in the area by 2008. The high renovation costs in the double-digit million range had to be borne by the state of Hesse, as the explosives factory had no legal successor after the war.

There is no permanent memorial on site (just a small memorial stone). However, the Breitenau Memorial offers guided tours on the subject upon request.
