Eschwege is a worth seeing half-timbered town in North Hesse. In addition to the beautiful half-timbered facades, the district town also offers visitors, for example, a pewter figure cabinet or the Werratalsee for summer bathing joys.

Eschwege is also an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding area region. And there is a lot to discover, such as the Hessian Switzerland and the Hohen Meissner on foot or that Werra Valley with its half-timbered pearls by bike. Of course you can also like the more distant destinations kassel with its mountain park or the Wartburg in Eisenach visit from Eschwege.

background

Eschwege is located in the former border region between the old Federal Republic and the GDR. The discontinuation of zone border subsidies after the border was opened in 1989/1990 led to the relocation of businesses and the loss of numerous jobs in the region and weakened the economy considerably. Stabilization has been achieved since 2000 through economic development. Tourism is also becoming increasingly important. Projects such as the Werratalsee, but also the creation of premium hiking trails, make the region more and more attractive for guests. Except among cycle tourists, who mostly know Eschwege from the Werra Valley Cycle Path, the diverse holiday region around Eschwege is still an insider tip. The area has retained its bridging function between east and west to this day. The East German tongue can often be heard, and there are signs on the streets for the way to East German (large) cities.

The best way to experience the country is by train. The regional train route between Fulda and Goettingen leads through slightly hilly and densely forested terrain, through which the Werra, which has been salted by potash mining, winds. The temperatures in winter are significantly lower than, for example, in the much milder Rhine-Main area - temperature differences of three to five degrees Celsius are not uncommon. On the other hand, it is often less humid and hot in summer than in the south. Numerous small castles and palaces overlook the country, and there are sometimes wild apple trees along the railway line.

In Goettingen as well as in Fulda there is a connection to the ICE. From Fulda you can take the regional train via a change to Bebra in about 70 minutes further to Eschwege. The journey time from Göttingen to Eschwege is around 35 minutes.

The timetable information shows no tracks for the Eschwege city station. But there are two tracks from which trains run the Cantus to and from the train station.
