Witzenhausen is a town on the lower Werra in North Hesse. A visit to Witzenhausen during the cherry blossom is particularly worthwhile. The plantations with 150,000 cherry trees around Witzenhausen are then transformed into seas of white blossoms. The highlight of the Witzenhausen cherry culture is the beginning of July every year Witzenhäuser Kesperkirmes with the German Championships in cherry stone spitting.

Witzenhausen received city rights in 1225. Until 1974 the city was a county seat since then the city belongs to Werra-Meißner district. The city is the location of the Faculty of Agricultural sciences from the University of Kassel and thus the smallest university town in Germany. In Witzenhausen there is a small, very international student scene that few expect in the north Hessian province.

By plane
If you come by plane, the best way to get over is via the Hanover Airport
(IATA: HAJ) arrive. From there there are hourly train connections to Witzenhausen via Göttingen. The alternative is airport Frankfurt(IATA: FRA), Rail connection via Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe.
In the street
Witzenhausen is about that

- A third Regional Express line runs every two hours on the route kassel – Mulhouse – Erfurt (RE 2), which also stops in Witzenhausen.

The barrier-free train station in Witzenhausen is located north of the Werra on a slope. On foot it is about 1.5 - 2 km to the city center with a longer climb.

- Witzenhausen is on Werra valley cycle path and on Gelster cycle path. Lockable bicycle parking boxes are available near the bridge. The key must be picked up at the ice cream parlor.

The old town with its pedestrian zone is best explored on foot. During the week there is also the option of taking the city bus from the city center to the north train station.
The sub-locations outside the core city are accessed by the regional bus. Line 210 runs every hour during the week to Großalmerode and on to Hessische Lichtenau, opening up Hundelshausen and Trubenhausen. The bus line 220 runs via Wendershausen, Werleshausen and Bad Sooden-Allendorf to Eschwege.

- Half-timbered old town with market square - The old town consists of a well-preserved, almost closed half-timbered ensemble. The side streets are also worth seeing. Cozy pedestrian areas invite you to stroll and stop.

The Liebfrauenkirche is the Protestant town church in the small town of Witzenhausen in northern Hesse. The former basilica dates from the 13th century. The church tower with the tower house is still preserved from the old building. It determines the silhouette of the old town when you look from the Diebsturm. - Witzenhäuser Kesperkirmes - The folk festival, which takes place annually in the first half of July, is the highlight of the Witzenhausen cherry culture.
