Wanfried is a small town with beautiful half-timbered houses in the Werra Valley. In terms of tourism, the city with its 4,300 inhabitants belongs to the Werra-Meißner-Land.

Wanfried is a very old settlement, already before 813 it was mentioned under the name "In wanen In Riden" and also as "Uuanenreodum". In the course of history, the place was repeatedly involved in armed conflicts due to its border location and once belonged to Thuringia, sometimes to Hesse. In 1608 Wanfried was elevated to the status of town by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen and received market rights. The Werra shipping at that time made the place an important trading and transshipment center from the water to the land routes Leipzig and Nuremberg. In the 19th century, Wanfried lost its importance as a trading town Wanfried Agreement 1945 was an exchange of territory between the US-American and Soviet occupation zones along the so-called Whiskey vodka line agreed.
In addition to the actual core town, Wanfried also includes the districts of Altenburschla, Aue, Heldra and Völkershausen.
The blackberry man is the symbolic figure of the Wanfrieder, who are also called blackberry men. The figure plays an important role with his entourage, the elves and dwarves at the traditional Heimatfest in summer. For four days he symbolically takes over the reign in the town hall.
The exact historical origin of the figure is uncertain, one of the possible explanations dates back to 1608 when Wanfried was promoted to town. Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel is said to have made it a condition that the Wanfrieds bring two carrying baskets with blackberries to his Eschweger castle every morning during the ripening period.getting there
