Avoid Sundays and public holidays in spring
The mountain range is quite populated on beautiful Sundays and public holidays, as it is a popular excursion destination in the Kassel region (especially on Easter and the public holidays in May). It is best to use Saturday at the weekend. Then it is much less busy, as many use Saturday for shopping. On weekdays you can still enjoy the peace and quiet up here. Of course you are not always alone, but the number of visitors is manageable. Attention: The nature park center and the gastronomy are closed on Monday.

With public transport

From Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station with the regional express of the Kurhessenbahn direction Korbach to the train station Zierenberg (Connection runs every hour). Alternatively, you can get from Kassel Central Station with the Regiotramlinie 4 direction Wolfhagen also to the train station Zierenberg (both off kassel NVV price level 4).

Far cheaper option with a short hike: From Kassel main train station with the Regiotramlinie 4 to the stop Fürstenberg (name in the timetable information "Calden-Fürstenwald Bahnhof"). The stop is still in the Kassel-Plus tariff area. From here you just walk 2.5 km on beautifully landscaped paths to the nature park center below the Helfensteine. The route with about 120 meters in altitude is signposted from the stop with a white marking "NPZ" (for nature park center).

Another variant leads from the 1 Ahnetal bus stop Direction Dörnberg (NVV line 110; daily). Since this stop is still in the city of Kassel tariff area, it is the one cheapest optionto get to the Dörnberg. Follow this from the Ahnetal Fulda-Diemel-Weg (F) over the Hohlestein in a beautiful landscape along the edge of the forest to Dörnberg (nice hiking trail). Habichtswald Nature Park Center

The center of the Habichtswald Nature Park has existed on the Dörnberg since summer 2009. The permanent exhibition deals with nature conservation, geology (subject of shell limestone) and the early settlement of the region by the Celts (small replica Celtic house in the exhibition). There is also a music-based television presentation of nature images from Dörnberg and the Habichtswald. Children can search for fossils in a sandpit. Changing special exhibitions complete the offer. Helfensteine

The Helfensteine ​​are two rocky cliffs that are quite easy to climb and rise to a height of 510 m. They are located above the glider airfield with a beautiful panoramic view. Wichtelkirche

The protected juniper heath with limestone grassland can be hiked through on the Alpine and Jägerpfad. Both circular hiking trails were laid out between 1948 and 49 by the Hessisch Waldeck'schen Gebirgs- und Heimatverein. High Dörnberg

Highest elevation of the massif with the remains of ring walls. The mountain can be hiked over the meadow area from the north flank (in the upper part, the path is quite steep). From the edge of the summit plateau you have a beautiful view to the west and north towards Bärenberg, Zierenberg and the Warmetal.

Worth seeing rock cliff with ramparts and a beautiful view. The rock is located 2 km southwest of the Helfensteine ​​(at 51 ° 21 '8 "N.9 ° 21 '47 "E). Nice view to the northeast Ahnatal until Reinhardswald. The cliff has to be climbed. When it is wet, it is better not to climb up because of the slippery climbing route.
