Zierenberg is a small town in Habichtswald Nature Park, about 15 km west of kassel located. The state-approved resort is known for the nearby one Hohen Dörnberg, a very worth seeing, hardly wooded ridge which also serves as a glider airfield.

background

Zierenberg, first mentioned as Tyrenberg in 1242, was founded by Landgrave Heinrich I around 1290 through the dissolution of the surrounding villages Hedewigsen, Hilbolzen and Gerixen to secure rule in the upper Warmetal and had city rights as early as 1298. The oldest half-timbered town hall in Hesse is the town hall, built in 1450, in the town center, while the late Gothic town church was built between 1293 and 1343. It contains noteworthy wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, the portal and a crucifixion group at the top of the church tower come from the former archpriest church on the Schützeberg Wolfhagen. In 1450 the compulsory marriage was lifted, which allowed kings and princes to force widows and orphans to marry at will.

Today the municipality of Zierenberg consists of the localities of Laar, Escheberg, Hohenborn, Burghasungen, Oelshausen and Oberelsungen, which were incorporated in the 1970s, as well as the town of Zierenberg and the hamlets of Friedrichsaue and Friedrichstein.

Ahle Wurscht

Awl sausage
Zierenberg im Merian 1655.

The "Ahle Wurscht", a coarse-grained, cut-resistant raw sausage, is a regionally known specialty. The name of this North Hessian sausage has of course nothing to do with "old sausage". The association "Nordhessische Ahle Wurscht e.V." founded in 2004 awards the quality and trademark "North Hessian Ahle Wurscht" every year. The pork may only be obtained from animals with a slaughter weight of at least 150 kg and must come from regional production. The meat must be processed further within 32 hours after slaughter. Garlic, coriander, nutmeg, pepper, allspice, mustard seed and sugar are allowed as spices. Not permitted on the other hand are flavor enhancers, ripening accelerators, nitrite curing salt and starter cultures. The maturity of the "Round" in pig intestine (35 mm diameter) is about 4 weeks (in beef intestine 6 weeks). The thicker one "Stracke" 43 to 80 m in diameter, matures between 2 and 7 months.

For more information, see the page of the Friends of the "North Hessian Ahle Wurscht e.V."
