bad Salzungen is a spa and district town on the northeastern edge of the Rhön in the southern Thuringia.

The salt springs were already known to the Celts, at that time they produced salt from the spring brine. The first graduation tower was built in 1590, until then the salt was painstakingly boiled in pans. The temporarily existing up to 24 graduation houses were then the main source of income for the city.
The spa operation began in 1801, during drilling in 1843 saturated brine was found at a depth of 144 m, the graduation houses became superfluous with the concentrated brine. In 1851 the first Kurhaus was opened in the building of the former sugar factory. - (10 km east) - Thuringia's oldest bathing resort. The Altenstein Castle there and the Altensteiner Park, a listed historical landscape park, are well worth seeing.
