background

The first documentary mention of a monastery complex as "Casa Sanctae Mariae" took place in 762.

Benefactor of the Cistercian monastery was Heinrich von Stahleck, Count Palatine near Rhine, the date of foundation is February 12, 1158. The Count Palatine had the monastery built on his property near the village of "Bilihildehuse", the first monks came from the Ebrach monastery Steigerwald;

A first flowering phase the abbey is the subsequent period. In their prime, the Cistercians of the Bildhausen Monastery owned rights and property in over 155 localities as a result of rich donations and purchases. The monastery is one of the most important in all of Franconia.

in the Peasants' War (approx. 1524-1526) the monastery became the center of the action and on April 12, 1525 it was occupied by rebellious farmers and heavily devastated for the first time. The one named after the monastery Pile of picture houses, the last of the three great Frankish peasant armies, was about 7,000 strong. The rebellious peasants were under the leadership of Hans Schnabel and Hans Scharr, both citizens of Upper Franconian towns. After supporting the siege of Marienberg fortress near Würzburg with around 1000 men, the rebel army surrendered on June 4, 1525, almost without a fight Meiningen the army of Elector Johann von Sachsen. The uprising was over. The leaders were executed with the sword.

in the Markgräfler War In 1552/1555 the monastery again suffered severe damage, but was able to recover until the monastery suffered severe war damage again in the Thirty Years' War 1618-1648. In the 18th century, the monastery began to prosper again.

General view of the monastery from the south

In the Secularism the monastery was dissolved in 1802. The Bavarian state has used the facility as a forest service building since 1803. In 1826 the Romanesque basilica and the cloister (from the time the monastery was founded), the gate chapel and the guest building were demolished, and the interior furnishings were distributed among the churches in the surrounding areas.

From 1897 the sisters of the St. Joseph Congregation came to the remaining parts of the monastery and founded an institution for the disabled there, which is now run by the Doninikus -ringenisen-Werk. The Abbey and Syndicate have been owned by the Order of Women since 1926.

Today, the "St. Josefskongregation Ursberg" operates various commercial enterprises, including a monastery butcher, a monastery gardening, the Kostergasthof with hotel as well as agriculture and forestry. Another source of income is the lease for the neighboring golf course, which was built in 1984 and rented out to the golf club as the operator in 1986.

The Dominikus -ringenisen-Werk maintains a facility for disabled people who are employed in the monastery’s agriculture.

From the former 140 Franciscan Sisters in the middle of the 20th century, only a few religious sisters remain today, all of them at an advanced age.

Politically, Maria Bildhausen is now a district of Münnerstadt;
