background

In 1524, according to a historical report by the forester at the time and with his permission, a new settlement was built an hour below the source of meaning. More settled clearings followed. They were initially controversial because the bishop did not agree with the clearing. In 1588 the dispute ended. The "wild" settlements were named Wildflecken after one of the new hamlets.

In 1908 Wildflecken received a railway connection with the Sinntalbahn Jossa – Wildflecken. However, the line has been closed since 2009.

Wildflecken is a member of the Kreuzberg Alliance, one in 2010 from different am Kreuzberg local communities and institutions jointly founded association with the aim of jointly developing living, working and recreational areas in the region.

Districts of Wildflecken are Oberbach and Oberwildflecken.

Wildflecken military training area

The Wildflecken military training area was founded by the Wehrmacht in 1936 and is located above the village of Wildflecken. The troop camp was used for combat training (shooting range with shooting ranges and bunkers). It was created as a gigantic military complex with an area of 7,400 hectares. The villages of Werberg, Altglashütten, Neuglashütten, Dörrenberg, Schmelzhof, Ebertshof, Rothenrain, Reussendorf, Kippelbach, Dalherda, Hintergichenbach and other hamlets and farmsteads had to be evacuated. The notorious 1st SS tank regiment of the "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" was trained here. The training camp remained undiscovered by the Allies for a long time during the war.

After the war, the camp was taken over by the US troops and used to accommodate the numerous prisoners of war and displaced persons. From 1951 the training area was then used as a location for US troops, Elvis Presley also spent a few weeks here. The last US troops were withdrawn in 1994.

The training camp and the shooting range are still used by the German troops today. The area of the military training area and thus also many of the Rhön mountains with the Dammersfeldkuppe (932 m), the second highest Rhön summit, and the Auersberg (809 m), the striking "local mountain" in the upper Sinntal between Wildflecken and Oberbach, are not accessible as bombardment mountains.
