The Frankfurt Hahn Airport is a civil airport converted from a US military airfield in 1993 Hunsrück in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the passenger traffic it is mainly served by low-cost airlines.
background
In May 1993 the airport was near by Rooster in the Hunsrück put into operation as a civil airport. In the meantime, Frankfurt-Hahn is the eleventh largest German commercial airport and the fourth largest cargo airport in Germany. The airport and the operating company Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH have been on the advisory board of the Chinese HNA Group since 2017.
With the creation of additional flight capacities through the third runway at Frankfurt Airport, the low-cost airlines are increasingly moving there. Frankfurt-Hahn has always been unpopular with airline passengers because of its very remote location and the planned rail connection, which would have helped the airport to gain greater acceptance, has not yet been implemented (2020).
