Map of Kaiserslautern

The town Kaiserslautern is lying in Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate. With reference to the heyday under the Staufer Emperor and builder of the Palatinate Imperial Castle, Friedrich I. Barbarossa, Kaiserslautern is also called Barbarossa city.

Districts

From an administrative point of view, Kaiserslautern is divided into 18 districts.

City center

  • The Downtown are the total of 4 central districts with the old town and the new town of Kaiserslautern.
  • The Betzenberg with the Fritz Walter Stadium and wildlife Park adjoins the city center to the south-east of the railway line; it is predominantly a residential area.
  • The Lämmchesberg with the campus of university and the university residential town is directly connected to the city center to the southwest of the railway line.
  • The local district Dimple valleys / Volkspark With Eselsfürth adjoins the city center to the east; in addition to residential areas, modern commercial areas have also been built on the outskirts of the city in recent years.
  • The Birdache in the west of Kaiserslautern mainly consists of the settlements of the American armed forces and the Opel factory.
  • Erzhütten-Wiesenthalerhof In the northwest of the city is the oldest suburban settlement of Kaiserslautern, the settlement of this former forest area can be documented since 1726.

incorporated districts

In the course of the Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform, various places in the area were incorporated into the independent city of Kaiserslautern as local districts on June 7, 1969.

  • The district Erfenbach has approx. 2,800 inhabitants and is located northwest of the city center.
  • Erlenbach
  • Morlautern
  • Einsiedlerhof
  • Siegelbach with the Kaiserslautern-Siegelbach Zoo is a north-western suburb around seven kilometers from the city center with around 2,600 inhabitants. Siegelbach was first mentioned in a document in 1233 and was incorporated into the municipality in 1969. With its own village and club life, the village has been able to maintain a certain degree of independence.
  • Hohenecken with the Hohenecken Castle and the neighboring one Gelterswoog is a western suburb about six kilometers from the city center and is already in the middle of the Palatinate Forest. With approx. 4,100 inhabitants, Hohenecken is the largest district of Kaiserslautern and a popular residential area because of its easy accessibility.
  • Dansenberg is a south-western suburb at around five kilometers from the city center and around 3,000 inhabitants. In the past mainly agricultural, some new building areas have also emerged here in the last few decades.
  • Mölschbach

background

Kaiserslautern is located on the northern edge of the Palatinate Forest, the northern districts are already dem Palatinate highlands attributable. The center of the city is in the valley of the volume up, in the Lauterecken in the Glan, a tributary of the Near flows out.

The official population is just under 100,000 inhabitants. However, with the American stationing forces, who continue to shape the cityscape significantly, the threshold to the big city is clearly exceeded. Kaiserslautern is the largest city between Saarbrücken, Mainz, Ludwigshafen on the Rhine and the state border France and therefore has a relatively large catchment area.

Major cities in the area are Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Bad Kreuznach, Idar-Oberstein, Homburg, Pirmasens and Landau in the Palatinate.

Soccer

Betzenberg with stadium

Kaiserslautern is Football city. The most famous names for football in Kaiserslautern are on the one hand Fritz Walter, the captain of the world championship team from 1954, who was born in Kaiserslautern, and on the other hand the almost legendary Betzenberg, for locals simply the Betze, a football stronghold that was almost impregnable for foreign opponents for a long time immediately south and high above the city center.

The Fritz Walter Stadium on the Betzenberg, one of the landmarks of Kaiserslautern, is the home of the "Red Devils": The 1.FC Kaiserslautern (FCK) is one of the best-known football clubs in Germany, has been German champions four times and German cup winners twice. The German championship of the Betzekicker in 1998 as a climber from the previous year.

US military base

Kaiserslautern is the largest US base outside of the US that Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) includes around 50,000 military personnel and civilians as employees of the Americans.

The center of the military base is the Ramstein Air Base, the largest US military airport outside the United States and a central hub for troop and material transport for the US armed forces in Europe and Asia. The command bunker of the Warfighting Headquarters is also located in Ramstein. The front-line operations of the American air force are directed from Ramstein, and there are always enough bombs and missiles in stock for possible air attacks.

The Warrior Preparation Center, a training center for (virtual) war preparation, is located in the Einsiedlerhof district of Kaiserslautern. These are other US infrastructure in the vicinity of the city Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as the largest US Army military hospital outside the United States.

The consequence of the US military presence in Kaiserslautern is that entire city districts, such as Vogelweh ("Little America"), were newly created for the Americans. With its excessively wide streets, its own shops (US products), its own cinema and its own US police, the settlement looks more like a small American town than a German residential area. Since Kaiserslautern is in the approach lane from Ramstein, aircraft noise is a constant burden for the population: locals and guests can be distinguished by the fact that only the guests look up at the military aircraft that fly over the city, while some locals only recognize the type of aircraft by the sound can. However, the Americans are also among the largest employers in the region, and numerous US companies have a branch in the otherwise economically weak region.

By train

The 2 Kaiserslautern Central StationKaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaKaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsKaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof (Q547299) in der Datenbank Wikidata is located south of the city center and is the most important railway junction in the West Palatinate.

Long-distance trains serve the station from the direction Saarbrücken, Frankfurt am Main and Mannheim, there is also a direct connection to the French capital Paris. In local transport, Kaiserslautern is the stop of the Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn with direct connections to Mannheim, and the regional express trains from Karlsruhe and Koblenz via Trier and Saarbrücken are also important for the journey. From the direction of Mainz or the Rhine-Main area in general, Kaiserslautern cannot be reached without changing trains, you have to change to the regional train in Bingen. The numerous other rail routes are not very interesting for a journey, but can be used for onward travel.

Most of the other train stations in the Kaiserslautern urban area fall under "also ran": Pfaffwerk and Kaiserslautern West (at the garden show), Galgenschanze, Einsiedlerhof, Birdache and Kennel garden. Kennelgarten is not accessible for wheelchair users, in Einsiedlerhof only platform 1 (trains in the direction of Homburg and Kusel) is accessible for wheelchair users; Vogelweh is only partially accessible (flat steps and inclines).

Outside the city limits, there are other stops, especially for cyclists:

  • Kindsbach, 10 km to the city center and Landstuhl, 20 km, the regional express also stops. Offer themselves for the journey Saarbrücken or Kusel in the western parts of the city. Mostly flat route.
  • Otterbach, 5 km, is closer to the northern parts of the city than Kaiserslautern Central Station. Mostly flat route.
  • Schopp, 15 km, is close to Gelterswoog and in the southwestern districts of Kaiserslautern. However, the route has to be checked because the B 270 is very busy. Low mountain range conditions.
  • Enkenbach-Alsenborn, 12 km, is suitable for the destination Eselsfürth as well as for the northern districts. Slight inclines.

In the street

Kaiserslautern is located at the junction of A6that goes north of the city, as well as the one coming from the northeast A63. You can drive directly into the city at the Kaiserslautern triangle. For those coming from Saarbrücken / Trier, the Kaiserslautern-West exit is much more practical.

The A6 is currently being expanded from two to three lanes; As a result of the construction work, there are regular long traffic jams, especially during rush hour. The A63 however, it is completely empty at any time of the day or night.

mobility

Kaiserslautern has a dense network of city buses operated by the Kaiserslautern municipal utility. The central hub is the bus stop City center, where almost all city buses stop, from there the lines run in a star shape through the city and to all parts of the city. There is night traffic on weekends and public holidays.

The regional buses should not be used for city traffic, because they are not barrier-free and some are so old that they could be given an H license plate. Bus drivers don't really like it either.

Parking space is in short supply in Kaiserslautern and for this reason the entire parking space in the city center is managed within the city ring, so that if you want to park for more than three hours, you have to use a parking garage. The only recommendable parking garage is the "City" parking garage at Löwenstraße 5 (which is also not listed in the parking guidance system for this reason, as it is not supposed to be found). All other parking garages fall under the category of "modern highway robbery" and should be avoided.

Work

Kaiserslautern is an industrial city with around 10,000 jobs in the manufacturing industry. Well-known names are primarily "Adam Opel GmbH" and "PFAFF Industriesysteme und Maschinen AG", one of the world's leading manufacturers of sewing machines. Pfaff is representative of a textile industry that flourished in the region in the 19th century, but which has seen a sharp decline in modern times: company names such as "Spinnerei Lampertsmühle" or "worsted yarn spinning mill Kaiserslautern" are now a thing of the past. Kaiserslautern's industry is also known at least nationwide through the "Guss- und Armaturenwerk Kaiserslautern" (today ACO) founded in 1898: the lettering adorns the manhole covers in many other German cities, today 63,000 tons of steel are cast here every year.

In general, the number of industrial companies in Kaiserslautern fell sharply from the period towards the end of the last century. A first countermeasure to compensate for this was the establishment of the University of Kaiserslautern on July 13, 1970 as a technical university. The PRE-Park (Technology Park) was created in the vicinity of the university, and the Fraunhofer Institute and the Max Planck Institute as well as the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) have been relocated.

security

The security situation in Kaiserslautern corresponds to that in the whole of southwest Germany, according to which there are no particular threats to body and soul.

Natürlich sollte man aber auch hier die üblichen Regeln beachten (z.B. keine Wertsachen im Auto liegen lassen, Fahrräder immer anschließen usw.).
