Map of Zweibrücken

Zweibrücken was an important residential town in the Middle Ages and early modern times. The former residential palace of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken family is still the largest secular building in the Palatinate and, after the aristocratic line died out, the seat of the Royal Bavarian Court of Appeal, today the Zweibrücken Higher Regional Court with jurisdiction for the entire Palatinate.

Zweibrücken was almost completely destroyed in World War II. The Americans then set up an important garrison in Zweibrücken. After the troops withdrew in 1990, Zweibrücken fell into a serious crisis and is today as structurally weak as the neighboring Pirmasens, but benefits from the slightly better transport links, so that the city did not fall into such a deep hole. Nevertheless, Zweibrücken is the smallest independent city in Germany today.
