Pirmasens is a city on the southwestern edge of the Palatinate Forest, not far from the state border France.

background

Historically, Pirmasens is considered to be the center of the shoe industry in Germany. In the best of times, Pirmasens had 60,000 residents and almost full employment. With globalization and the relocation of shoe production to cheaper countries, the city began to decline. Today, Pirmasens is one of the structurally weakest regions in West Germany with over 10% unemployment and high vacancy rates, to which the withdrawal of US troops, formerly a not insignificant economic factor, also contributes.

The Pirmasens city center was completely destroyed in the Second World War, but there are still some sights here and there. Otherwise, the attraction of Pirmasens lies more in its location in the Palatinate Forest and its close proximity to the Wasgau with its numerous castles and sandstone cliffs. Pirmasens is one of the cities in Germany that is least visited by tourists.

Practical advice

trips

Pirmasens is so centrally located in the south-west Palatinate that it is a convenient starting point for excursions in all directions and for almost every taste, for families with children as well as for seniors, regardless of the means of transport. However, you should bring sturdy clothing and good shoes, do not expect great luxury, and enjoy discovering yourself. Only the winter season is more suitable for connoisseurs and lovers.

Within a radius of approx. 20 to 30 km you will find numerous castles in different state of preservation, plus the idiosyncratic sandstone formations of the Wasgau, leisure facilities, from the biosphere house with treetop path in Fischbach to the natural science interactive museum in Pirmasens, easily accessible, spacious parks for young and old (e.g. Dahn, Zweibrücken, Pirmasens); In addition, robust hikers and bikers looking for peace, nature and solitude: little cultivated, boggy valley meadows with many old fish and ice ponds and densely wooded hill country (Palatinate Forest). Art and culture can be found at one of the numerous local markets and festivals, but also at top-class theater performances, symphony concerts and art exhibitions - or at the open-air rock concert at Lemberg Castle. For detours to France, e.g. to Bitscher Land (approx. 20-30 km one way), you should be motorized or an experienced cyclist. In the direction of the Rhine valley, for example, you can also take the Queichtalbahn via Annweiler / Trifels to Landau (zoo, federal horticultural show).
