Bitche (German Bitsch) is a french City in the department Moselle.

background

Politically, the municipality belongs to the arrondissement Sarreguemines and is the administrative seat of the canton of Bitche.

Bitsch town hall

The city did not come into being until 1681, when the Sun King Louis XIV began building a fortress on a rock on the western edge of the Vosges Mountains. Bitsch was built at their feet during the construction of the fortress. The first mountain fortress was built according to the plans of Sébastien le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban. It was completed in 1693. This first fortress, partially carved into the rock, was demolished a few years later. However, a fortress was built again on the same site between 1740 and 1754. In the German / French war of 1870/71, a large part of the city's population fled to the fortress to seek protection there. After the First World War, the fortress was renewed and became part of the Maginot Line. At the beginning of World War II, the crew was around 1000 men.
