Castles

The most famous resident of the castle was the knight Franz von Sickingen (1481-1523), who strengthened the complex from 1518 against the emerging cannons. After participating in the Palatinate knight rebellion and defeat in the attack on the prince-bishopric of Trier at the beginning of 1523, the knight retired to Nanstein Castle in April. This fell after only two days of cannon bombardment by the advanced and united armies of the three imperial princes, and Franz died of the consequences of a serious injury suffered during the siege. From 1543 the castle was rebuilt by his sons and grandchildren into a Renaissance castle, around 1600 the complex reached its greatest extent with approx. 125 m in length and almost 100 m in width. In 1668 it is conquered by the Elector of the Palatinate and then blown up. In 1689, the castle was finally destroyed by French troops during the War of the Palatinate Succession.
