Since 2005, this area has been one of the European metropolitan regions with administrative headquarters in Mannheim. In Baden-Württemberg, this includes the city districts Mannheim and Heidelberg, the Rhein-Neckar district and the Neckar-Odenwald district. This also includes the Hessian district of Bergstrasse. From Rhineland-Palatinate, these include the districts of Bad Dürkheim, Germersheim, Rhein-Pfalz and Südliche Weinstrasse and the independent cities of Ludwigshafen, Frankenthal, Landau, Speyer, Worms and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.
This article aims to describe the core area of the metropolitan area. The peripheral areas at Landau in the Palatinate, Wörth on the Rhine, Worms, Bruchsal, Heppenheim are by no means as well connected as they are in the Ruhr area knows.
