Luisenpark - Luisenpark

The Luisenpark is the largest park in Mannheim and was created for the Federal Horticultural Show in 1975. The Luisenpark is a leisure facility, botanical garden and zoo in one. With the Luisenpark, Mannheim has a very diverse park that only a few cities in Germany can offer.

Parking spaces

There are chargeable parking spaces at the Technoseum, a few free parking spaces in the lower Luisenpark area.

Public transport

The stops are at Luisenpark Telecommunications tower (Line 5) and Luisenpark / Technose Museum (Line 6). The main train station is less than 2 km from the entrance lower Luisenpark away. The bus lines 60 and 62 go to the stop Lanzvilla on, from here the entrance to the Oberer Luisenpark can be easily reached.

By bicycle

The Neckar cycle path leads directly to the entrance on the southern bank of the Neckar at the telecommunications tower along. To visit the park, you have to leave the Neckar cycle path at the tram stop right at the foot of the telecommunications tower. Bicycles cannot be taken into the park.

Access and opening times

The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to dusk (November to February 4.30 p.m., May to August 8 p.m., in spring / autumn 6.30 p.m. or 7.30 p.m.). However, this only applies to the entrance. You can leave the park at any time via turnstiles at the exits.

Entrance fees

  • The regular admission price in the main season (March to October) is 8 €, for children 6-15 years 4 €.
  • In the low season you pay 4 €.
  • Annual tickets are relatively cheap and cost 39 € or 32 € in advance.
  • Events / concerts cost extra; admission to the Luisenpark is usually included.
  • The area "lower Luisenpark" is accessible free of charge.

Accesses

Important: There is only one permanently manned ticket office at the main entrance (at the Luisenpark / Technoseum tram stop).

Entrances with cash registers:

  • Main entrance on the southern edge of the park near the Technoseum. In the Luisenpark shop you can buy souvenirs or borrow a handcart.

Entrances with partially occupied cash registers:

  • Telecommunication tower entrance

Entrance with automated admission (day or annual pass must be purchased in advance):

  • Entrance "Unterer Luisenpark": located on Ludwig-Ratzel Straße towards the center.
  • Entrance Fichtestrasse: Located on the southwestern edge of the park to the villa district.

There are also several exits with turnstiles.

Accessibility

The Luisenpark is largely handicapped accessible. Wheelchairs are available for hire.

The Luisenpark was laid out in 1892 and named after Grand Duchess Luise von Baden. The park was part of the Federal Horticultural Show in 1975 and was redesigned for this purpose. Stadtpark Mannheim gGmbH is the sponsor.

Since the mid-1980s, the “Friends of the Luisenpark” e. V. initiated numerous projects and sights in the park and thus contributed significantly to the steady success of the facility over the past 25 years.

Tourist Attractions

The structure that towers above everything in the park does not belong to the park and can independently can be visited from a park visit: it is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The elevator in the TV tower costs € 7, with a € 5 discount, and infants are free. At the top there is also a viewing platform next to the viewing platform Revolving restaurantthat rotates around its own axis once every hour at noon, in the afternoon and in the evening.
  • Plant show house: Tropical house, succulents, aquariums and terrariums, butterfly house.
  • Sculpture meadow near the main entrance.

Gardens

  • Alternating florets at the main entrance: In spring, the 13 beds are transformed into colorful seas of tulips, hyacinths, pansies, etc.
  • Chinese garden with tea house in the northwest corner of the park.
  • Fern garden on the south bank of the Kutzenweiher. The garden, established in 2005, shows 50 species of fern
  • Citrus garden on the southern edge of the park. The themed garden, opened in 2001, shows 150 plant species from the Mediterranean area.
  • Rose promenade in the north-eastern park area at the leisure meadow.
  • Perennial garden located north of the Kutzenweiher.

  • Show vineyard - Small show vineyard with several types of wine behind the leisure center. The wine made from it in the Palatinate is available in the Luisenpark shop at the main entrance.

  • Storks are ubiquitous in the park. Some also spend the winter in Mannheim.

  • Ride on the Gondoletta on the Kutzerweiher. The self-propelled, electrically operated by cable-operated boats travel on a round course of 1.8 km with two stations. The plant is only in operation from April to September. Fares: Round trip (around 40 minutes): € 5; Distance journey (approx. 20 minutes): 3 €; Children (6-15 years): € 3.50 or € 2.50
  • Mini golf - Located in the leisure area on the eastern edge of the park (€ 2.50; children up to 12 years: € 2.00)
  • Relax in the sound oasis - is located north of the Kutzenweiher. Various loudspeakers hidden in the vegetation fill the resting area with loungers and chairs. Just sit down, listen to the sounds and switch off.

Activities and tips for families

Many varied playgrounds make the park interesting for children too:

The children also like the butterfly house in the plant show house or a visit to the penguins. Most of the lawns can be walked on; there is space for ball and other games.

nightlife

There is no real night life. Twice a year in the summer months in the Luisenpark there is a huge, enchanting fireworks display. Then tens of thousands visit the park when the weather is good and wait for the things to come. It may be advisable to bring a blanket with you so that you can spend the waiting time on the large lawn more easily.
