Hildegard von Bingen
Hildegard von Bingen (* 1098, † September 17, 1179) lived in Bingen, she was a Benedictine and is considered the first representative of German medieval mysticism. In her time she was a polymath, she created her own approaches, set new impulses and thus enabled a comprehensive perspective. As a recognized scientist, she founded the Rupertsberg Monastery between 1147 and 1150. After 1150 Hildegard wrote a book about the development and treatment of various diseases. The second of the natural history works dealt with the inner nature, nature and healing power of the various creatures and plants. Hildegard brought the knowledge of diseases and plants from the Greco-Latin tradition together with that of folk medicine and used the popular plant names for the first time.

- Rheinstein Castle · Located across from Assmannshausen in the municipality of Trechtingshausen, it is one of the most beautiful castles on the UNESCO World Heritage List Middle Rhine Valley. On the ruins of the former Fatzberg Castle, Rheinstein Castle was the first castle extension of the Rhine Romanticism
The original residential tower was probably built in the 13th century as a customs post for the empire and was also known as the Vogtsburg. In 1323 the castle was first guaranteed in Mainz ownership when Archbishop Matthias donated it to the Mainz cathedral chapter. Rudolf I von Habsburg is said to have stayed here from 1282–1286. He was on trial against the insubordinate knights von Reichenstein, Sooneck and Ehrenfels (in the immediate vicinity of Assmannshausen). On Rheinstein, also known as Königstein, the later German Emperor spoke the memorable words about the “sublimity and vocation of noble German knighthood.” After its heyday in the 13th and 16th centuries, the castle fell into disrepair.
In 1823 Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia bought the castle and had it rebuilt in the spirit of Rhine romanticism. The builders at the time were J.C. by Lassauxi, Friedrich Schinkel and Wilhelm Kuhn. By succession, the castle remained in the possession of the Hohenzollern family until 1975. The opera singer Hermann Hecher has been lord of Rheinstein's castle since 1975. It is thanks to his family that the castle has become a “little palace”.
The carefully restored castle is open regularly, see website. There are also night tours, castle shops, a café terrace and room rentals.
