background

Cornerstones of the city's history

Boppard in the Topographia Hassiae by Matthäus Merian 1655.

There is evidence that people lived in the area of today's city of Boppard as early as 13,000 years ago. The Romans were particularly present in the 1st century AD up to the 5th century, today many remnants such as the late Roman Bodobrica fort attest from this time.

The town was first mentioned in a document in 643 AD, since then there has been evidence of viticulture in Boppard and today the town is the largest wine-growing community on the Middle Rhine.

At the end of the 18th century, Boppard was the third largest city after Trier and Koblenz in the Electorate of Trier, today over 15,000 people live in Boppard.

Boppard also includes the Bad Salzig health resort, which is up the Rhine from the city center.

trips

Round tour & hike to Ehrbachklamm

Round trip to Ehrbachklamm
Waterfall in the Ehrbachklamm

In about 5 hours of walking you can go on an attractive circular tour of the wildly rugged Ehrbachklamm to be hiked.

The Ehrbach valley extends over 17 km from the Buchholz district on the Hunsrück plateau to Brodenbach in the Moselle valley. The round trip begins by taking the Hunsrück Railway from Boppard to 10 Buchholz up to about 400 m height. Here you cross the Hunsrückhöhenstraße and are on hiking trail 51E. This leads through the forest valley of the Ehrbach down to Brodenbach on the Moselle at a height of around 80 m. On the way you come through the approximately 1.5 km long Ehrbachklamm, which at 1 begins. This is not an alpine "rock gorge", but a steep, gorge-like section of the forest valley. The hiking trail meanders along the narrow, romantic stream with the help of wooden bridges. Below the gorge there is with the 2 Eckmühle InnIncidentally, a refreshment stop.

North of the Linkenmühle at 3 it is advisable to take another detour of 100 meters uphill, and the worth seeing Ehrenburg pay a visit (castle hotel with gastronomy; beautiful valley view; opening times of the castle: Easter Sunday to November 1, Mon - Sat from 10 a.m.; Sun and public holidays from 11 a.m.; www.ehrenburg.de)

Return journey: By bus from Brodenbach to Koblenz and then by ship or train back to Boppard. If there is still time, you can interrupt your return journey in Koblenz and, for example, take a walk to the German corner at the mouth of the Moselle.
