Regions

  • The upper reaches of the Moselle is that french Part of the Moselle in Lorraine. It extends from the source of the Moselle Col de Bussang in the Vosges and at around 730 m above the cities of Remiremont, Epinal and Toul with about 190 kilometers of river length to after Metz.
  • From Toul the Moselle is navigable. Here the western Rhine-Marne Canal flows into the Moselle, which is canalised from here.

  • The Luxembourg part of the Upper Moselle extends for around 28 kilometers from the three-country corner Schengen (eponymous for the agreement) to Wasserbillig. The Moselle is the state border here Germany.

In Germany: From Trier onwards, the Moselle valley in Germany is characterized by a strongly meandering course with many vineyards on partly very steep slopes.

  • The Lower Moselle (also Terrassenmosel) is the lowest and approx. 100 kilometers long river section of the Moselle up to the confluence with the Rhine in Koblenz.
