Traben-Trarbach is a city and municipality on the Middle Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate and state-approved climatic health resort. Other districts are Litzig, Wolf, Bad Wildstein, Rißbach, Kautenbach and Hödeshof.

background

Traben-Trarbach is characterized by viticulture and tourism. Accommodation options range from overnight stays in a wine barrel, private rooms to five-star hotels, while the gastronomy offers everything from kebab snacks to gourmet menus. Since the Reformation in 1557, the two localities Traben and Trarbach have been Protestant exclaves on the Moselle such as Wolf, Enkirch and Winningen, which dated black Kurtrier were surrounded. While the other wine towns on the Moselle were forbidden from trading with the Protestant surrounding area, the wine trade, especially with Prussia, later also overseas, flourished in the second half of the 19th century. The two places developed into the second largest wine trading center in Europe after Bordeaux. Appropriate capacities had to be created to store the wine. In 1902 the wine merchants and over 100 wineries stored over 15,000 fuders (one fuder = 1000 liters) of wine in specially constructed cellars up to 100 m long, some of which were multi-storeyed, which were cut into the hard slate rock in Trarbach and mostly bricked up in Traben. As early as 1899, 18,000,000 liters of wine were shipped by rail and ship.

This wine trade created enormous prosperity and wealth as the basis for lively building activity in the upper-class style. In 1904 the independent municipalities of Traben and Trarbach were combined to form an administrative unit and connected by a bridge that brought them together. The bridge was designed by the Berlin architect professor Bruno Möhring who in the following years planned a number of remarkable Art Nouveau houses for wealthy wine merchants. After a devastating major fire on July 21, 1857, which almost completely destroyed the half-timbered village of Trarbach on the right bank of the Moselle, the houses here were almost exclusively rebuilt from stone - in Traben, numerous half-timbered houses that are still preserved today have been preserved.
