background
The place has a 2000-year history that is related to the Leuk people. In the middle of the 4th century the missionary Mansuetus came to the city. He became the first bishop of Toul in 365 and headed a large diocese that spanned the borders of the Leuk territory. The French Revolution led to the end of clerical importance. Although always militarily important, the city was a fortress, the city lost its importance. Nowadays it plays a role as a hub for inland shipping, as this is where the western Rhine-Marne Canal ends in the canalized Moselle.

- 1 St-Etienne (cathédrale Saint-Etienne de Toul, Toul Cathedral; St-Etienne de Toul). Saint-Étienne de Toul was the cathedral of the Diocese of Toul in the city of Toul; today it is the co-cathedral of the diocese of Nancy-Toul. The current Gothic style building was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. After severe destruction in World War II, it was largely restored. The church is considered an outstanding example of the flamboyant style.
- 2 Fortification of Toul with town center (fortifications de Toul, Vauban's ramparts). Well-preserved city walls, ramparts and moats encompass a city center that is well worth seeing. The fortress was planned and built by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban.
activities
A city tour with a visit to the cathedral should be completed with a coffee shop in one of the numerous bistros. You can see and be seen particularly well in one of the cafés around the Place des Trois Eveches, a roundabout with a beautiful fountain.

Practical advice
The city center, which is surrounded by the ramparts, should not be used by non-residents; the parking situation is difficult. Immediately outside the trench surrounding the city there are some larger parking spaces (e.g. at Place Porte de Metz), from which the city center can be easily reached.
trips
- Nancy, the city of Art Nouveau (Art Nouveau) with the Place Stanislas, one of the most beautiful classical ensembles in Europe (UNESCO World Heritage Site); numerous high-class museums.
- Saint-Nicolas-de-Port. The industrial city east of Nancy on the A33 shines with its flamboyant late Gothic basilica.
- Liverdun With its beautiful location high above the Moselle, it is also worth a short detour, perhaps on the way back from Nancy
- Villey-le-Sec is of great interest to those interested in military history. An entire fortress was integrated into the small town between 1875 and 1879.
