Nancy had been the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine since the High Middle Ages. The Dukes of Lorraine had the city gradually expanded into a representative residence in several construction phases and occasional demolitions, laid out as a planned city with a rectangular floor plan. The current cityscape of the city center goes back to the plans of the former King of Poland, Stanislaus I. Leszczyński, who was demoted to Duke of Lorraine after his defeat in the War of the Polish Succession in 1737. The ensemble of places Place Stanislas, Place de la Carriere and Place d'Alliance is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nancy is also known for numerous Art Nouveau buildings.
