background

Moselle panorama at Treis-Karden

Treis cards The lower section of the Moselle valley between Pünderich and its confluence with the Rhine near Koblenz is called the Lower Moselle, or Terrassenmosel. The Lower Moselle landscape differs from the Middle and Upper Moselle in its mostly narrow valley with partly high and steep flanks. On the slopes facing south and west, viticulture is often practiced in very small, terraced steep slopes. The development of the Moselle into a major shipping route in the 1960s has permanently changed the river and the banks. Five barrages between Koblenz and Zell for the locks of large ships turned a sometimes narrow, sometimes wide river bed with gently sloping banks into a canal-like body of water that is contained in the storage areas by wall walls and rock fillings.
