Niederwald

Niederwald monument with the Germania
  • 8 Niederwald monument - It was built between 1877 and 1883 based on a design by Johann Schilling from Dresden. It's 38 meters high, of which the Germania Measures 12.5 m. The monument is intended to symbolize the re-establishment of the German Empire after the Franco-German War of 1870-71. The main character is Germania with the imperial crown in her raised right hand and the imperial sword in her left hand. It has been a symbol for the Germanic peoples since ancient times. At the base, on the largest bronze relief of the 19th century, King Wilhelm of Prussia sits on horseback amid 132 generals and princes. It shows the spirit of optimism before the Franco-German War. On the front corners of the base stand the two allegories of war and peace. The left side relief shows the "farewell of the warriors". Pain and not joy seem to predominate in the figures. On the other side is the relief of the returnees of the Franco-German War. Here the joy prevails.
You can get to the monument from Rüdesheim with an open gondola lift and from Assmannshausen with a chairlift (€ 5.50 / € 7). From there you have a wide view of the vineyards, the Rhine and Rhineland-Palatinate. Every year in July, the event "History in Light" takes place at the Niederwald Monument. Rheingau delicacies and Rheingau wine are offered before the illumination spectacle “History in the Light” and a musical fireworks display light up the night. In 2008, Rüdesheim celebrated the 125th birthday of Germania. The state of Hesse, as the owner, had the stairs and paths secured and installed a new lighting system.
  • 1 Niederwald Temple - Lookout temple between the mountain station of the gondola and the Niederwald monument. Count von Ostein had it built as an attraction in 1788. During the romantic era of the 19th century, the temple became the focus of many great minds of that time. The visitors included Brentano, Beethoven and Goethe. In November 1944, Allied bombers completely destroyed the temple. The temple was rebuilt and inaugurated in June 2006 through the initiative of the Reconstruction Association Niederwaldtempel e.V.
  • The view is not a sight in the classical sense, but you should have seen it anyway. The most popular vantage point is the Niederwald Monument with a view of the Middle and Upper Rhine, Bingen and the Hunsrück. A similar view can be had from the viewpoints Bingerblick, Hunsrückblick and Naheblick (the name says it all), all of which are connected by a hiking trail to each other and to the Niederwald monument and the hunting lodge.
  • The Niederwald hunting lodge is a castle from the middle of the 18th century. Today it is used as a hotel and restaurant. The castle can be reached by car, but it is much nicer (albeit slower) to take the chairlift from Assmannshausen.
  • The Rossel is an artificial castle ruin. It stands on the path between the hunting lodge and the Naheblick viewpoint. Behind the ruins you have a beautiful view of Bingen, the Nahe estuary, the beginning of the Middle Rhine Valley and far beyond Rhineland-Palatinate into it. A hiking trail leads through the lower floor.

Assmannshausen

The village belonging to the municipality of Rüdesheim is surrounded by steep vineyards and forests in a valley 4½ km downstream on the Rhine in the Middle Rhine Valley. From there, ascending roads and paths lead into the vineyards and the heights of the Niederwald with the Niederwald monument. The place, then called Hasemanneshusen, was first mentioned in a document in 1108. In the center of Assmannshausen you will find half-timbered buildings in which there are historical wine bars. Here the Rhenish cheerfulness is cultivated in a pleasant atmosphere. Since 1953 it has been possible to take a cable car up to the Niederwald hunting lodge, a hotel with a deer park. The famous Pinot Noir red wine location "Assmannshäuser Höllenberg" is located in Assmannshausen. The Assmannshausen Pinot Noir are among the best German red wines. Outside the township

The mouse tower (right), in the background Bingen
  • Mouse tower. History and legends entwine around the mouse tower in the “Binger Loch”, today's “Binger Riff”. A tower stood in the same place as early as the 5th century. 500 years later, Bishop Hatto II converted the mouse tower into the front tower of the Hattenburg. Hatto was considered an uncomfortable fellow. In 968 he had received the then imperial free city of Bingen from Emperor Otto I. According to legend, Hatto II is said to have driven his citizens into famine by buying up all the grain supplies. To prevent the citizens from getting to the supplies, he set fire to the granaries when they tried to loot the supplies. While the Bingers threatened to drown in the fire, mice sprang up from the burning barn and pursued Archbishop Hatto. Believing mice can't swim, he fled to the mouse tower. But the mice caught up with Hatto and ate him alive. The mouse tower functioned as a watchtower and signal tower at Binger Loch in the 14th century. He also marked the border of the Prussian Rhine Province. Even today, the mouse tower with its technical facilities is used to regulate navigation on the Rhine. A visit is only possible on the Open Monument Day.

In Rüdesheim there is only bottling and no more production. In the shop there are various products related to brandy such as liqueurs, chocolates, place settings and of course cups for the world-famous Rüdesheimer Cafe.

Cafes

Ruedesheimer Cafe
The world-famous drink is a strong coffee: It gets its whistle from the local Asbach on brown sugar. The serving ritual is to put the warmed brandy with the sugar in a large special cup, light the whole thing and, while stirring, extinguish with added hot coffee.

Burgzoll: 5,- €, Kinder 3,- €.
