history

  • The Cistercian monastery Eberbach was founded in 1136. In 1186 the monastery church, begun in 1145, is consecrated. The monastery, which initially consisted of 12 brothers, quickly developed into one of the largest and most important monasteries in Germany with up to 100 monks and 200 lay brothers.
  • In 1803 the monastery was closed.
  • 1815 to 1848: Ducal Nassau insane asylum, forerunner of the Eichberg Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
  • State prison from 1877 to 1912
  • From 1912/13 military convalescent home
  • Since 1945 in the possession of the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture in the administration of the Hessian state wineries.
  • In 1998 the monastery was transferred to the Eberbach Monastery Foundation, with the task of opening the monastery and maintaining it permanently.
  • Comprehensive general renovation since 1986.

The monastery has survived the passage of time almost undamaged, which can be read from the structures to this day.

In 1986 the film was partly shown in the monastery "The name of the Rose" turned. Eberbach Monastery served as a historical backdrop for the interior shots of the film.

Eberbach Abbey Church

monastery

  • Monastery church - Unadorned basilica (built 1145-1186), 80 m long
With the exception of a few stone wall tabernacles and sideboard niches and a celebratory seat in the choir, there is no longer any services for worship. The rich furnishings were largely destroyed in 1803 after the monastery was closed.
  • Chapter House - open space without windows.
  • Lay refectory - It was built around 1200 as a two-aisled hall with 13 groin-vaulted double yokes on small sturdy columns and served as a dining room for the lay brothers. It is located on the ground floor of the lay office building (Konversenbau), which was extended after 1707. It was later used as a winery. The old wine presses can still be visited today. Some tools are also on display.
  • Lay dormitory - (built after 1200) - 83 m long dormitory of the lay brothers in the Konversenbau on the upper floor. Today it serves cultural events and wine auctions.
  • Monks' dormitory (built around 1250) - 72 m long dormitory above the chapter room. The monks rested in the unheated hall, clad only in their habitats, on wooden plank beds. A staircase leads down from the dormitory into the choir of the church. In the middle is the entrance from the cloister.
  • Monks refectory - The monks' dining room (also known as the gentleman's refectory). It was rebuilt in the 18th century to suit the tastes of the time and for greater convenience for the monks. The stucco ceiling dates from 1738.
  • Hospital basement (built around 1220)
  • More historical Cabinet basement - The fraternity (translated as the brother's hall) was the room in which the monks, following the commandment of "ora et labora", went about their domestic work. Today, fine wines are stored here.
  • Old brewery
Lay refectory (dining room), later a press room with historical wine presses

Wine

Viticulture in Eberbach Monastery is part of German viticulture history and began in the Cistercian winery (founded in 1136).

Eberbacher wine was already quite popular in the Middle Ages, the monastery was the largest wine-growing company on the Rhine, had its own fleet, and delivered wines to Cologne.

Today's official classification "Cabinet" for a German premium wine of the upper quality class takes its name from the former work room of the monks (Fraternei), which was called "Cabinet" in 1730 and was used to store the high-quality drops.

The vineyard directly at the monastery is the Domaine Steinberg with 30 hectares between the monastery Eberbach and Hattenheim. The Riesling site is protected from the infiltration of cold air by a 2600 meter long quarry stone wall, which was completed under the monks on August 2, 1767; the wall is partly responsible for the favorable specific microclimate of the hillside location.

After the abolition of the monastery in the secularization of 1803, the complex became a state domain and was first in Nassau and later in Prussian ownership. The monastery and winery have belonged to the State of Hesse since 1945, and the Hessian State Winery Eberbach is based in Eltville. To the one with 220 hectares of cultivation area largest German winery there are also several vineyards in other villages in the Rheingau.

After the war, in Eberbach, as elsewhere in Germany, the focus was initially on mass production. From the seventies of the last century, however, there was a rethink and the quality of the wines came to the fore. Representing this development is the new underground wine cellar of the state winery, which opened in 2008 and is one of the most modern in Germany.

Eberbacher Riesling Today stands for the typical, clear-flavored Rheingau Riesling and has its lovers around the world. Eberbach Monastery is partly responsible for the fact that German Riesling, along with Chardonnay, is counted as the finest white grape variety. As a white wine and compared to more southern locations, Riesling has more tartaric acid and "bite" due to the cooler climate in Germany, but also fewer tannins.
