Lorch on the Rhine is a wine town and belongs to the wine-growing region Rheingau. It is in the Hessian part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper one Middle Rhine Valley and with its 5 districts it belongs to the Rheingau-Taunus district. Lorch is located on the right bank of the Rhine and is traversed by the Wisper. The built-up urban area lies along the banks of the Rhine and extends from the mouth of the Wisper for another 2 km into the Wispertal.

background

Lorch am Rhein is a border town to Rhineland-Palatinate and at the same time the deepest place in Hesse. The center of the village lies at the confluence of the Wisper into the Rhine and from there meanders in both directions along a narrow strip between the banks of the Rhine and the Taunus heights. In addition to its quality as a wine-growing town, the Wispertal from Lorch is an Eldorado for motorcyclists, you drive for kilometers on a narrow and winding country road only through the wilderness.

As part of the regional reforms, in addition to the Lorchhausen numerous places are still incorporated in the Taunus, which differ significantly from the main town in terms of their appearance: Espenschied, Ransel and Wool difference. Ranselberg arose only afterwards from a former Bundeswehr garrison.

Free State Bottleneck - What may sound like a strange joke today was 90 years ago a unique small state that was not occupied by the Allies. It was created in difficult times after the turmoil of World War I and existed from January 10, 1919 to February 25, 1923.

Vineyards: The individual layers around Lorch to Bächergrund are: Schlossberg (53 hectares) and Kapellenberg (58 hectares), south of the Bächergrund: Krone (13 hectares), Pfaffenwies (35 hectares) and Bodental-Steinberg (23 hectares). The vineyards Rosenberg and Seligmacher belong to Lorchhausen. As in the entire Rheingau, the Riesling grape variety is mainly grown. 11 hectares were planted with 550 vines in 2010, so a small part of the abandoned and overgrown areas is cultivated again.

Practical advice

Lorch has the reputation of being a modern "valley of the unsuspecting" because there is no radio reception here. Cell phone networks also completely fail from the Wispertal at the latest.
