background

The district of Wicker belongs to the Rheingau wine-growing region. It is also known as the gateway to the Rheingau. The Weilbach district was incorporated in 1971.

Historical

  • Flörsheim

The Franconian settlements of Flörsheim 828, Wicker 910 and Weilbach 1112 were first mentioned in a document. Throughout the Middle Ages and modern times, there were close ties to Mainz, both ecclesiastically and sovereignly. The communities belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz until the beginning of the 19th century; Politically, Flörsheim has been under the Mainz Cathedral Chapter since 1270, Weilbach and Wicker under the Elector of Mainz since 1581. Flörsheim had its own court since 1270; the oldest surviving court book dates from 1447.

  • Weilbach

The oldest mention in a deed of donation to the St. Jakob monastery in Mainz as Wilibach dates from 1112. Weilbach was under the Mainz elector since 1581 and belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz. In 1803 Weilbach went to Nassau-Usingen and belonged to the Hochheim office at the time of the Duchy of Nassau. After the annexation by Prussia, it was assigned to the Mainkreis in 1867 and later to the Wiesbaden district in the Wiesbaden administrative district. Weilbach joined forces with the city of Flörsheim and the neighboring municipality of Wicker in the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse at the end of 1971.

  • Bad Weilbach

The Faulborn spring in Bad Weilbach is one of the numerous famous springs in Nassau. For a long time there was not just its own mineral water spring with a bottling plant. Medicinal water in the form of a sulfur spring also served as a basis for health-conscious guests in a spa house, a bathhouse and an inhalatorium. The neoclassical Kurhaus was built in 1838 on behalf of the Duke of Nassau. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Rothschild were among the guests of the facility. From 1911 the house was used as a rural school for women by the Reifensteiner Association for Economic Women's Schools in the Country, which Ida von Kortzfleisch founded. A colonial school was set up in the former medical center, in which women were prepared for life in the German colonies.

  • Wicker

The place was first mentioned on April 6, 910 in a deed of donation from Archbishop Hatto I of Mainz to the Fulda monastery. Around 1540 wicker was fortified, i.e. H. surrounded by wall, moat and rampart. The wall was about 4 meters high and 70 cm thick. Remains of the town wall are still visible in some places today. It was not until the end of the 18th century that the wall was razed and the first houses built outside the wall. In April 1610, Wicker was struck by a great fire. In two to three hours, 48 of the 71 courtyards, including stables, barns and wine press houses, burned down to the ground. Only 11 houses remained intact, the rest were damaged. The Thirty Years War prevented an early reconstruction. In 1654 there were 47 house and landowners in Wicker. Instead of the previously existing 71 houses, only 38 were found. In 1668 Wicker had a population of 179. In 1792 there were 100 houses again. After the First World War, Wicker was under French occupation. A memorial stone in the area still bears witness to the withdrawal of the French, the inscription of which says that this stone fell from the hearts of the people when the occupation troops withdrew. During the Second World War, the residents had to endure a night of fire on July 8, 1941, and on March 28, 1945, the village was even bombarded. After that, the place was taken by American soldiers and also incorporated into the American zone of occupation.

  • Keramag / Falkenberg

A number of mills on the Wickerbach, which have been known since the 16th century at the latest, belong to the Keramag / Falkenberg district. There were also quarries nearby, from whose stones the Flörsheimer houses were built. The actual history of the district began in 1912, when the Diamant Steingutwerke from Frankfurt acquired 13 hectares of land between the railway line and Main and built a factory here. [2] The factory has been called Keramag since 1917. At the same time, a settlement for the workers employed there was built in front of the factory gate. The district expanded significantly after the Second World War, when building land was designated here for many refugees and displaced persons. From the street names of the district one can infer their origin: Sudetenland, Silesia and East Prussia. In 1982, Keramag closed the Flörsheim location. The company premises were converted into an industrial park. Since then, the housing estate has been expanded, mainly through the construction of private homes.
