The Red main arises in Lindenhardter Forest at Creußen and flows 55 kilometers to the Mainz confluence to Kulmbach. The journey begins in the Franconian Switzerland, past the foot of the Fichtelgebirge to the confluence where that Upper Mainland begins.

The Rote Main is the less arid, but longer of the two source rivers of the Mains. The name comes from the loamy soil that gives the river a reddish-brown color, especially after rainfall.
