mobility

Map of Idar-Oberstein

Because of the extensive location in the various narrow river valleys with steep to very steep slopes, exploring the city on foot is only recommended if you limit yourself to one district at a time.

The districts of Idar and Oberstein each have a pedestrian zone.

Public transport in the city is carried out by buses. The focal point is the train station in the Oberstein district, from where all parts of the city are served.

Taxis can usually be found at the train station (Oberstein) and Marktplatz (Idar) or can be called up by telephone.

The "Obersteiner" spit roast is specially prepared and roasted over an open beech wood fire (Sic! Not grilled or tossed!) Rolled roast. Learn

As a medium-sized center, Idar-Oberstein has a comprehensive school landscape.

The local peculiarity of the jewelry and gemstone industry leads to specific institutions in this area. That is why Idar-Oberstein is a university location.

  • At its location in Idar-Oberstein, the Trier University of Applied Sciences offers an artistic and scientifically oriented design course in the field of gemstones and jewelery with its internationally renowned specialization in precious stones and jewelry. Together with the two vocational schools, the university area is located in the “Vollmersbachtal School Center”.
  • The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz maintains the Institute for Gemstone Research in Idar-Oberstein. This gemstone research department is part of the mineralogy teaching unit in the geosciences department.

The focus on jewelry and gemstones leads to the establishment of further, highly specialized institutes in this genre:

  • The German Gemmological Society e. V. is an internationally renowned institution of technical-scientific gemology (gemstone studies). Successful participation in the DGemG courses in gemstone and diamond studies leads to a documentary confirmation of the examinations performed, which entitles you to apply for specialist membership in the German Gemmological Society (F. G. G.). More than 30,000 course participants from 75 countries around the world have so far attended the DGemG courses designed to meet the demands of the precious stones and jewelry sector. These educational qualifications are known to regular viewers of the ZDF program Bares für Rares, as the jewelry experts often refer to these training courses to become diamond experts and gemologists.
  • The Research Institute for Mineral and Metallic Materials / Precious Metals / Precious Stones (FEE) GmbH is also based in Idar-Oberstein. The FEE specializes in growing crystals and manufacturing optical elements for lasers.

security

In general, there are no particular risks.

In the vicinity of the train station in Oberstein, the local Gesock often meets, to whom numerous property damage in the area is attributed. Immediate risks for travelers have not yet been observed.

Explorations to search for gemstones should only be carried out with suitable equipment and the necessary care and attention. In addition to possible rockfalls, also caused by other gemstone hunters, the often difficult terrain is a hazard that should not be underestimated. Information signs should be strictly observed! It goes without saying that cultivated / planted fields are taboo when searching for gemstones.

Practical advice

  • Even if many locals are of the opinion that many things do not work properly in the city, one should not underestimate the quality and efficiency of the municipal regulatory office. Drivers are strongly advised to observe the parking times or to take the respective parking tickets and display them very clearly (!) In the vehicle. Careful observation of speed limits is easy on the holiday budget; In particular, many non-residents are not aware of the speed limit of 50 km / h on the generously developed, two-lane nearby development.
  • The difficult geographical location leads to traffic routes that an inexperienced visitor does not necessarily expect. Elaborate loops and countless one-way streets make navigation difficult. Attention: Not all navigation devices have correctly recorded the passage authorizations and may lead the user against the direction of travel into a one-way street!
  • The few parking garages come from the times when an Opel Rekord was a big car. In the meantime, they are simply far too narrow for many vehicles. SUV drivers in particular should avoid parking garages and prefer an open parking space.
  • The "Austraße" car park, which is still listed in many navigation devices, can no longer be used (demolition).

  • The copper mine in neighboring Fischbach is definitely worth a visit.
  • In Bundenbach, a few kilometers northeast of the city, the Herrenberg slate mine is well worth seeing. Right next door, a Celtic settlement has been rebuilt according to old templates and is also worth a visit. In the valley lies the Schmidtburg, a very large castle ruin to which a beautiful promenade leads from the Gasthaus Forellenhof near Rudolfhaus.
