The Eiswoog is a popular excursion destination between the places Alsenborn and Ramsen, in Rhineland-Palatinate.

background

The Eiswoog is located in the middle of the stump forest, the northernmost branch of the Palatinate Forest near Ramsen. The Eisbach, which gives it its name, is dammed here over a length of 400 meters.

The name has nothing to do with frozen water and the lake was not, as is sometimes heard, used as a source of ice before the invention of refrigerators. The lake was probably created as a reservoir and fishing water as early as the Middle Ages. Among other things, it served as a source of water for the mills downstream. The lake was bombed in the Second World War and the facilities there were destroyed, but then rebuilt.

Today, especially in summer, numerous day-trippers from the region around Kaiserslautern come here, and it can get quite crowded at times.

getting there

Map of Eiswoog

By train

The 1 Eiswoog train station is only approached on Sundays and public holidays from Frankenthal via Grünstadt. The train station is located on a high ridge and is only connected to the Eiswoog itself by a very long flight of stairs. Those who are not good at climbing stairs will probably not be happy.

By bus

There is the bus line 457 between Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Grünstadt, which can be particularly interesting from the direction of Kaiserslautern and on days other than Sundays and public holidays (the line only runs Mon-Fri and Sat). But the bus only drives irregular.

By car

The Eiswoog lies between Ramsen and Enkenbach-Alsenborn and is almost impossible to miss when driving past. The next motorway junctions are Symbol: AS 17 Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Symbol: AS 18 Wattenheim, each at the A6.

The signage for non-residents is clearly in need of improvement. Coming from Enkenbach-Alsenborn you have to follow the signs to Eisenberg (Pfalz). Coming from Wattenheim you have to follow the signs to Ramsen (Enkenbach-Alsenborn is not signposted) and then simply drive through the village.

Legal parking is only allowed on the unpaved gravel field directly in front of the Stumpfwaldbahn station. Parking space can sometimes become scarce, especially on nice days. Customers of the restaurant or hotel can also use the parking lot directly at the house. This is also available to disabled non-customers; Unfortunately, the disabled parking space is not properly indicated.

By bicycle

The Eiswoog is on Barbarossa cycle path.

Tourist Attractions

landscape

  • Eiswoog reservoir (6 hectares) and other lakes.
  • Cozy valley with a lot of forest that invites you to go hiking.

various

  • 1  Ice Valley Viaduct. Ice valley viaduct in the encyclopedia WikipediaIce Valley Viaduct (Q1320771) in the Wikidata database. The imposing Eistal viaduct over the Eiswoog can be seen from afar. At 270 meters long and 35 meters high, it is the longest railway bridge in the Palatinate before the Pfrimm valley viaduct in Marnheim. The viaduct was built in 1932 and served rail traffic from Grünstadt to Enkenbach until 1988, since then the viaduct has been closed for rail traffic. From Eiswoog train station there is a narrow footpath to the north-eastern end of the Eistal Viaduct, from where there is an impressive view of the surrounding area. The viaduct itself is cordoned off and cannot be entered, but the tracks are still on the viaduct and also on the section immediately after the viaduct towards Enkenbach.
  • 2  Dreibrunnertal Viaduct. Deep in the forest, the disused railway line crosses a section of the valley over this 176 meter long and 28 meter high arched bridge.
  • 3  Punch head tunnel. To the west of the Eiswoog it was necessary to lead the railway line through a tunnel. The only tunnel on the line was built in 1927 and is 483 meters long. Despite its years of inactivity, the tunnel is surprisingly well preserved, except for details, and completely freely accessible, making it something for real adventurers. To the west of the tunnel portal there are still the ruins of the former service station at Stempelbrunnen in the forest.
  • 4  Stump Forest Railway. Tel.: (0)6356 8035. The Stumpfwaldbahn is a field railway with a gauge of 600 mm that was built by an association exclusively for tourist purposes in the Eistal. The 3 km long route leads from the Eiswoog through the woods to the outskirts of Ramsen. As a rule, you will book a complete round trip Eiswoog-Ramsen and back, but for a reduced price you can also do one-way or even only as far as the Bockbachtal junction station in the middle of the forest (train crossings only take place here when there is a large crowd in summer). The journeys are usually carried out with diesel locomotives and take about 50 minutes, but on special occasions there is also a steam locomotive for which a surcharge has to be paid. See also List of railways worth seeing in Germany.Open: from May 1st to October 3rd, Sundays and public holidays between 10:00 and 17:10 (last departure).Price: adults € 4.50, children € 3.50.

activities

  • hike - Four circular hiking trails of different lengths are marked from the parking lot with the designations 11-14, which lead around the Eiswoog and the surrounding stump forest. Sturdy shoes should definitely not be missing, as the paths are sometimes muddy.
    • The path no. 11 around the Eiswoog (approx. 3 km long) was made with a lot of effort Panorama footpath rebuilt. The route is incorrectly shown as "barrier-free" on the internet, it cannot be recommended to unaccompanied wheelchair users. In particular, windbreak is only very reluctantly cleared aside, the SWR even said in 2018 that the path was life-threatening.[1] To complete the circular route, wheelchair users also have to take a section of the road; There is no bicycle or footpath at this point, and the route cannot be overlooked due to the curves. A more attractive footpath is available for pedestrians, but it is not always maintained. There are also guided tours on this trail, carried out by the tourist office in Eisenberg (Palatinate), Cost 3 €.
    • Guided adventure hikes on various topics are also offered. Pre-registration is essential.
  • Swimming is allowed on the Eiswoog free of charge. At the landing stage, the bottom falls flat into the water, and you can lie on the lawn for sunbathing. However, there are no changing facilities on site, if you ignore the toilet in the parking lot, so you should dress in bathing suits beforehand. The kiosk with toilet above the lawn is part of the restaurant, the prices are not appropriate for the service.
  • water sports - There are rowing and pedal boats for rent on site, with which you can do a few laps on the lake - price € 8 per hour (as of 2018). Theoretically, the boats are barrier-free accessible via a lift, in fact the jetty is in such a miserable condition that one can only advise wheelchair users who are really tired of life.
  • There is one for little visitors Forest playground directly at the hotel car park.
