background

Málaga was founded in the 8th century BC. Founded by the Phoenicians as "Malaka". They built a settlement near the hill on which the Alcazaba is now located. During the second punic war the city or the trading center at that time fell to Rome. That still tells of the development and importance of the city in Roman times Amphitheater. During the time of the Great Migration, Rome was followed by an epoch under the changing rule of the Vandals, Alans, Visigoths and Byzantines. Around 711 the conquered Umayyads large parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Al-Andalus was the name of this Muslim-ruled part of Iberia. Umayyads is another spelling of this dynasty, which refers to the residence in Damascus. It was followed by changing Arab dynasties, the rule of the city was important Tamīm ibn Buluggīn, who was defeated in the civil war, but the Alcazaba and parts of his empire remained. With the reconquest of Malaga on August 18, 1487 by the Reyes catholicos (the Catholic kings) the fate of the last Moorish bastion of Granada, at the time under the rule of the Nasrid rulers, was finally sealed. The period after the Reconquista is often referred to as the golden age of Spain, and impressive evidence such as this can be found from this period cathedralIn retrospect, it was also a time of artistic, intellectual and thus economic stagnation.

At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, a large bourgeoisie emerged, which was supported by the two families Larios and Heredia. They made Malaga the second largest industrial center in Spain. The city continues to prosper in the 21st century. It has become something of a world capital of tourism. It is mainly through its airport that many of the twenty million tourists who visit Andalusia each year know the name of the city. But Málaga owns the Catedral Nuestra Sra. de la Encarnación, the Castillo de Gibralfaro and the Alcazaba (fortress) of the Moors are some sights. Not to be forgotten Pablo Picassowho was born in the port city and spent the first fifteen years of his life here. A museum is dedicated to him.

It's quite cheap to rent a car in southern Spain. Due to the large number of providers, a customer-friendly price war has developed. The important thing is that you make sure that the car you have rented is properly insured. In any case, the best option is fully comprehensive insurance with no excess, which almost every car rental company also offers for a surcharge. Almost all known car rental companies have a counter at the airport. Pretty much any car can be rented here. But there are also well-known car rental companies in the holiday areas. Cars are often cheaper here than at the airport. And you can also return the car at your holiday destination. If you rented at the airport, you have the advantage that you save yourself the transit from the hotel to the airport.

Taxis are quite expensive in Malaga. For longer journeys, however, you should definitely avoid a taxi, as public transport is well developed in Malaga.

The port of Malaga was already known to the Phoenicians. They built a settlement here in order to moor their ships and do business here. That was 3000 years ago. The 4 Malaga Cruise Terminal(Cruise port) is one of the most important of its kind in the Mediterranean. Malaga is often the beginning or the end of a cruise.

There is also a ferry pier. The only line ferry is the daily served route to Melilla in operation. The fishing port may still be of interest to the holidaymaker, even if Spain’s fishing fleet has hardly caught any fish in the Mediterranean for a long time, as it has been hopelessly overfished for many years.

A visit to the port is definitely nice and sensible. The beaches of Malaga are connected to the port in the east. There is always something going on here when the weather is nice and that is almost always the case here. There are also numerous restaurants and bars at the harbor where you can linger and relax. It is also interesting that in many discotheques entry is free for women, but men have to pay. In front of the discotheque, you actually always go to a bar to have a drink in peace before you hit the dance floor. This also opened a little earlier. They are available from rustic to modern. Many are also based on classic Spanish bodegas. Here you can get wine from the area around Malaga, often sweet wine and sherry. A good start to the night.

Work
