background

Map of Torremolinos

Torremolinos is located southwest of Malaga airport and the Guadalhorce estuary. On the other hand, the place goes seamlessly into the neighboring city Benalmadena above. In the hinterland it extends to the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas.

The city directly on the Mediterranean lives mainly from tourism and, together with Benalmádena, forms the center of tourist activities on the eastern one Costa del Sol. Therefore you can find everything that a package tourist expects. Apart from the Molino de Inca, the city does not offer any outstanding sights. Here you can concentrate entirely on the sun, sand and sea. At the same time, Torremolinos is so centrally located that you can easily get to the important places in the region.

Nothing is left of the original fishing village of Torremolinos. It was a vacation spot in the 1960s where Frank Sinatra and Liz Taylor, for example, relaxed. But there weren't any hotels here yet. Even today, signs indicate actors who visited Torremolinos on vacation during this period. In 1965 the first real hotel was built, which is still in the center of Torremolinos today. Due to the success, many more were quickly added. Vacation homes were also built. Unfortunately, the whole thing happened without a development plan and so the village grew unchecked and quickly into a small town. Only when the construction bubble burst, the new hotels and holiday apartments were discontinued. Today's Torremolinos is characterized by hotel buildings with over ten floors in the style of the 1970s. Even today, Torremolinos is primarily a destination for low budget- Vacationers, which is particularly unpleasant behavior, especially among English tourists, keyword camp louts, can express. Every space, no matter how small, is built on. Since many holiday apartments are empty due to the recession in Spain or out of season and many shops are unused, the place does not make a good picture in many places.

The "old town" around Plaza de la Nogalera, Plaza Costa del Sol (upgraded at the end of 2018) and Plaza de Andalucia are pedestrian zones. The latter is also the main point of the 1 Oficina de Turismo. Right next door is a travel agency specializing in day trips by bus to cities in Andalusia. It is also very pleasant to sit under the large rubber trees at the Plaza de la Union Europea around the corner.

A 2 further tourist information is on the beach at the roundabout at Plaza de Lido. Both are only open on weekdays from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. in winter, and also in the evening during the high season. The free city map is well designed.
