The name should come from Fuen For Fuerte so fortress after fortress in the west of the city and Girola derive a shape of a fishing boat in Andalusia.

The Phoenicians established the first settlement here. The subsequent Romans named the city Suel. The Moors conquered Suel in the 8th century and called them from then on Soy ayl. The Castillo at the gates of the city was built in 956. The Reyes cotholicos (catholic kings) could the castle Sohail not until 1497, five years after the capture of Granada. It was one of the last bastions in Moorish hands. In 1730 the castle was rebuilt. From here they wanted to prevent trade with Gibraltar, which was conquered by the British in 1704. Open air concerts take place in the castle in summer. Today Fuengirola lives from international tourism. security

Next Marbella and Torremolinos assigns Fuengirola as the third city on the Costa del Sol has a very high crime density. Over the past few years, attempts have been made to stop and reverse this trend, but this has not yet been done sufficiently. Although the number of crimes directly related to tourism has decreased, great caution should be exercised when traveling here. Of course, this also applies at night.

Practical advice

trips

  • Cordoba. By bus it only makes sense if you stay there overnight.
  • Málaga. Reachable by train in around 45 minutes, inexpensive; Parking in Malaga city center is hardly possible.
  • Seville. By bus it only makes sense if you stay there overnight.
  • Gibraltar. There are no scheduled buses there - because of the special status of Gibraltar. But you can take a bus to La Linea and walk over from there. Difficult by car, especially in the high season, high risk of traffic jams and hardly any parking spaces. Most conveniently with bus excursions that are offered in travel agencies. Cable car ride to the Felsberg and food up there very expensive!
  • Granada. To be reached by bus or guided excursion; Bus excursion including a guided tour of the Alhambra around € 65.
  • Ronda. Can be reached by bus from the bus station several times a day; Travel time about 90 minutes.
  • Mijas. A public bus runs about every half hour; Travel time 20 minutes. Mijas very worth seeing, but very touristy, a lot of Asian tourists.
  • Marbella. By bus, which leaves every half an hour, there is a beautiful old town; Share of "sophisticated" residents and tourists higher than in Fuengirola; accordingly also more luxurious shops, especially in the associated luxury port of Puerto Banus.
  • Camenito del Rey. The impressively laid out path through the gorge in the hinterland of Malaga can be explored on a guided excursion or on your own by car.
