Estepona is located on the Mediterranean Sea with the Sierra Bermeja mountains over 1000 m high in the background. The beaches are 21 km long. Remnants from prehistory have been excavated in Estepona. The Romans, Phoenicians and Moors left traces that can be found in the 1 Museo Arqueológico (former town hall) in the center of the old town at Plaza Blas Infante and the Tue.-Sa. Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to the old town of Estepona, a lot of urbanizations for vacationers were built in the fifteen years before the real estate bubble burst. Between the old town and the city limits of Marbella, the “New Golden Mile” was built along the Mediterranean Sea in competition with the “Golden Mile” of Marbella. The New Golden Mile includes the districts of Rio Padron, Villacana, Cancelada, El Saladillo, Benamara, Isdabe-Atalaya , El Paraiso. West of the old town towards Algeciras, the districts of Bahia Azul, Valle Romano and Buenas Noches emerged. Overall, the city now offers space for more than 100,000 residents.

trips
The over 1000 m high green Sierra Bermeja was a difficult obstacle to overcome and at the same time the gateway to the hinterland of Andalusia.
- A worthwhile excursion leads over the MA 557 from Estepona up the mountain into the Sierra Bermeja to Jubrique and 1 Algatocin. After the serpentine driveway up to the almost 1000 m high pass Puerto de Peñas Blancas with a beautiful view of the Costa del Sol from Estepona. Here you can make a 4.5 km detour to Refugio Reales. The good road leads uphill and down through pine and chestnut forests with beautiful views of Jubrique. A little later there is a junction to the left into the artists' village Genalguacil. Here you can find a lot of sculptures and ceramics all over the village. The mayor has invited artists in the summer for years. You left the many works of art behind. The journey continues to Algatocin. In the valley of the Rio Genal, next to the bridge, you can find the 1 Venta San Juanwhich is open on weekends (Fri-Sun) and public holidays. The stop is worth it. Hungry guests are offered a variety of grilled meats and sausages cooked on a large outdoor grill. The Venta is very well attended on fine weekdays. The campsite is also operated Camping Sanjuan. Next door is the competition Camping Genal both also with bungalows.
In Algatocin one arrives at the A 369, which after Ronda or. Algeciras leads. One can go over Ronda and Marbella(San Pedro de Alcantara) or via the two attractive white villages Gaucín and Casares drive back to Estepona.
