Gaucín is a community in Málaga Province.

background

The white village of Gaucin lies like an elongated crocodile on the ridge of the Sierra del Hacho, which separates the mountainous landscape of the Serrania de Ronda from the plain of the Campo de Gibraltar. The locals therefore also call their area "Balcon de la Serrania". The crocodile's head is on the right side of the castle "Castillo de El Águila", which was rebuilt in 1808. Previously there was probably a Roman fort at this point and later a castle of the Moors with the name Arrabalete, which fell to the armies of the Catholic kings on May 27, 1485 during the Reconquista.

Gaucin lies on the tourist routes "Ruta de la Guerra de la Independencia Española en las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga" (Route of the Spanish War of Independence in the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga) and "Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos" (Route of the White Villages).

getting there

By plane

The nearest airport is Gibraltar, but for flights from Germany the airports are in Málaga (easy to reach via the A405 and AP7) and Jerez (arduous on country roads) better to use.

By train

Gaucin itself has no rail connection. However, in the valley of the Rio Guadiaro, approx. 9 km from Gaucin, the village of El Colmenar with the railway stop "Estación de Gaucin" of the RENFE railway line is located Algeciras above Ronda to Bobadilla.El Colmenar can be reached by car from Gaucin by taking the A405 towards Algeciras at the Repsol petrol station and then turning right after about 1 km into the narrow county road MA9300.

In the street

If you are coming from the coastal highway A7 or the toll coastal highway AP7 at Manilva turn onto the A377 and follow the junction uphill Casares has happened, you can already see the "crocodile" lying on the Sierra del Hacho in the distance. With every meter of approach it gets bigger until you have reached the police station of Gaucin, where you turn right into the winding place, while the junction to the left turns after 100 m into the busy A405, which the cities Algeciras and Ronda connects with each other.

By boat

The nearest sea port is Algeciras on the Mediterranean at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar.

activities

Especially in spring a short hike from the southern outskirts on a gravel road down the steep slope into the meadow landscape below the "crocodile" with its sheep farms and almond trees is worthwhile. On the way you will be rewarded with a great view of the Campo de Gibraltar and the striking rock chain of the Sierra de Crestillina and, to the left of it, the massive red mountain range of the Sierra Reales. Of course you have to go back the same steep path.

If you go up the A405 towards Ronda, after about 1km you come to a spacious, fenced wooded property with a large iron gate on the left. Here you can walk through and hike on the wide forest road, which leads moderately downhill to the left in large serpentines through the forest. You finally come to an agriculturally used plateau at Puerto de las Eras, continue straight ahead and after a while you reach the Rio Guardiaro, which you cross behind a farmhouse over a narrow long stone bridge. On the left bank a narrow tar road leads to the railway station "Estación de Cortes". Behind the train station, the PRA255 hiking trail branches off to the left, the well-preserved Roman trail "Via Pecuaria", which climbs steeply into the town Cortes de la Frontera leads. There you can call a taxi in front of the bullring (the phone number is on a notice board), which will bring you back to Gaucin for around 20 euros.
