Cortes de la Frontera is a small community in the Málaga Province.

background

Ayuntamento

Even the Romans maintained a base here called "Cortex" (defense). The well-preserved Roman road, which runs steeply up from the Estacion de Cortes train station to Cortes de la Frontera, tells of this. The place was later settled by Moors until it fell to the Christian Reconquista in 1485.

The place is at the intersection of the natural parks Sierra de Grazalema and Los Alcornocales (the latter translates as "The Cork Oaks") and at the southwestern exit of the Serrania de Ronda. Because of the vast cork oak forests, Cortes became rich in the 18th century through a cork oak industry, as evidenced by many well-preserved neoclassical buildings, such as the B. the town hall (Ayuntamento).
