Mijas is a city in the Málaga Province in the Spanish region Andalusia.

background

The "real" Mijas is the white village "Mijas Pueblo", which seems to stick to the Sierra de Mijas at a height of 430 m above the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Fuengirola. In the course of the building boom on the Costa del Sol, Mijas has expanded enormously on the coast in the new districts "Mijas Costa" and "Cala de Mijas" in the last decade. For a while, the city administration pursued the goal of transforming the idyllic small town into a "science town" for 300,000 people. Due to the real estate and financial crisis in Spain, the lofty plans have probably come to an end. For tourists on the Costa del Sol, Mijas Pueblo is the first address when it comes to finding a souvenir from Andalusia. The entire city center of Mijas Pueblo is a single bazaar of souvenir shops, but has been able to retain its charm of the "white village" to some extent. After an extensive shopping spree, you can eat well in the numerous restaurants and enjoy the wide view of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding sierras.

In the street

Approximately along the southern city limits of Mijas Pueblo to Fuengirola, the toll road AP7 leads from Marbella to Malaga. The toll-free A7 motorway from Marbella to Malaga runs further south towards the Mediterranean and joins the AP7 toll-free motorway east of Mijas (i.e. in the direction of Malaga) to form a toll-free motorway. From Malaga and Torremolinos, take the Mijas exit and drive up the A368 Directly into the town of Mijas Pueblo. Coming from the toll-free A7 from Marbella and Fuengirola, take the last exit from Fuengirola (Fuengirola / Mijas) and turn left here onto the A387, which leads uphill to Mijas, which crosses the toll AP7 and shortly before the old town it joins the A387 in a roundabout. Shortly afterwards at a second roundabout you drive directly into the only main street of Mijas Pueblo, parking is usually pointless here. In the middle of the village, turn left steeply downhill to a large, paid parking garage. A lift takes you 6 floors up to Plaza Virgen de la Pena, the town's main square, and from here you can easily explore the town on foot or on one of the donkeys available.

Tourist Attractions

Churches, mosques, synagogues, temples

  • From the A387, which bypasses Mijas Pueblo above, a hiking trail leads into the Sierra de Mijas, on which you can reach the small chapel after 1 km "Ermita Virgen de la Pena" reached. From here you have a beautiful view over Mijas Pueblo and the Mediterranean coast. The Ermita was carved as a cave in the rock by a Carmelite brother between 1656 and 1682. A sacristy made of natural stone was added later. In a wall niche is the statue of Virgen de la Pena, the patron saint of Mijas. The Ermita is only open for one day at Easter. The Hermitage is the religious center of Mijas.
  • A second Hermitage is that Ermita de San Antón. You can find it south of the A-368 towards Benalmádena along Calle Fuengirola and then on Via Sector 54. HGier is the district of Osunillas, which is very agricultural. The brotherhood that lived here has been documented since the 13th century. The church itself dates from the 18th century and was restored in 1981. In addition to the church, the view of the valley is definitely worth a detour here.
  • Inmaculada Concepción. The church dates from the 16th century. At the place where the church now stands, there was initially a castle and later a mosque. Many believe that the tower of the church is said to have served as the tower of the castle in the past. However, this has not been proven.

Buildings

In the Plaza de Toros, between the city center and the park, there is a small bullring that is still regularly used for bullfights. In the event-free time it can be visited for a small fee and you can buy bullfight-related souvenirs in the tiny shop at the entrance. The construction of the arena is quite peculiar. You don't really know an arena of this kind again. The actual arena is oval, but the structure around the arena is square. The building dates from 1900.

Parks

At the highest point in the city is an extensive park with steep cliffs sloping down at the edge.
