Federal motorway 60

The Federal motorway 60 (BAB 60 or A 60) connects the German-Belgian border south of Saint Vith with the Hessian Ruesselsheim. The western section connects to the Ourtalbrücke at Steinebrück w: Autobahn 27 (Belgium) at, loses its second directional lane from the Winterspelt exit and only becomes from the exit Prüm four-lane again. To the south of Wittlich he goes into the federal road at the Wittlich junction 50n with the long controversial Hochmosel crossing, which is expanded to four lanes except for a section between Longkamp and Hahn Airport and at the Rheinböllen exit to the Federal motorway 61 meets. At the Nahetal triangle south of Bingen begins the eastern section of the BAB 60, the Mainz bypasses south Ginsheim-Gustavsburg the Rhine crosses and at the Rüsselsheim triangle on the Federal motorway 67 ends. The motorway is part of the European route 42 and between the exits Prüm and Bitburg of the European route 29. The total length of the motorway is currently 113 km.

The A 60 was supposed to cross Rhineland-Palatinate from west to east and run right through the Hunsrück main ridge. The realization of this motorway failed due to protests from the Guldental near Bad Kreuznach, through which the planned motorway would have run, so that the A 60 today consists of two geographically separated sections: the western section in the Eifel and the eastern section in Rheinhessen. The missing connection between the two sections will gradually be closed by an expansion of the federal highway 50, in the course of which, inter alia,. the highly controversial Hochmosel crossing was built.

particularities

The motorway between Winterspelt and Prüm is only designed as a "Sparautobahn", i.e. two lanes without any structural separation. The further section between Prüm and Bitburg, which was originally also built as an economy motorway, was expanded into a full-fledged motorway a few years ago after several serious accidents with numerous deaths.

On the Mainzer Ring, the motorway is still partly laid out without a hard shoulder. In general, the Mainzer Ring and the rest of the way to Rüsselsheim are considered to be enormously congested and should be avoided at all costs in rush hour traffic.
