Federal motorway 20

The Federal motorway 20 (BAB 20 or A 20, also Coastal highway or Baltic Sea Motorway) is for the greater part of its length part of the European route 22, on another part of the European route 251. It connects, as far as completed, Bad Segeberg above Lübeck, Wismar and Rostock With Greifswald and Prenzlau and ends at the Federal motorway 11 at the Uckermark cross near Gramzow.

The total length of the motorway is currently 345.2 km. This makes it the longest “two-digit” motorway in Germany.

background

The construction of the motorway did not begin until 1992 as part of the German Unity Transport Project. In any case, the expectations of the traffic volume have not been met in the eastern part. The autobahn is one of the weakest routes in Germany.

The extension to the west over Bad Bramstedt and the crossing of the Lower Elbe via a tunnel south of Glückstadt are planned. The highway is supposed to continue south Bremerhaven passing through the already existing Weser tunnel (currently federal highway 437) to the planned triangle Westerstede, where they are led to the Federal motorway 28 should meet. This plan was originally planned as BAB 22. The planned extension is a good 200 km.

Sacked section at Tribsees

The lane between the Bad Sülze exit (20) and the Tribsees exit (21) sagged in 2017, which led to the full closure of this section. The restoration is expected to take until 2023.
