background
The old town of Stralsund belongs together with Wismar since 2002 to World Heritage UNESCO. Stralsund was founded in 1234. It belongs to the former constituency of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Stralsund has already visited it many times and has often brought visitors with her. For example, the former US President George W. Bush was in Stralsund in 2006, and the Baltic Sea Council summit took place here in 2012. But also some queens and kings, princesses and princes have paid a visit to Stralsund.
Stralsund is the "gateway" to the island of Rügen. The only land connection leads through Stralsund and over the Rügen Bridge or Ziegelgraben Bridge.

Stralsund owns a Public transport network with several bus routes that open up the entire city area. On weekdays the buses run between the early morning and evening hours (until around 8 p.m.). The service is restricted on weekends and public holidays. There are no buses at night.
A single ticket costs € 2, a day ticket € 6.
In addition, there are a number of (partly EU-funded) cycling and hiking trails that lead through the old town and the surrounding area.
There are also Park & Ride spaces, the use of which is particularly recommended for those who are not in the area, as the city center (i.e. the historic city center) with its narrow streets, one-way streets and large parts of the pedestrian zone is very confusing by car.
Tourist Attractions
Churches
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bc/St._Nikolai_Stralsund.jpg/220px-St._Nikolai_Stralsund.jpg)
- 1 St. Mary. The mighty basilica with a 32 m high central nave and impressive effect both inside and outside was essentially built in the 15th century. The most famous piece of equipment is the large Stellwagen organ from 1659, which can be heard regularly in concerts. From the 90 m high Viewing pulpit you have a beautiful view over the city (access via 366 steps).
- 2 Heilgeistkirche. From the 13th century and attached to the Heilgeistspital. The baroque colored facade from 1715 and the picturesque foliage are particularly beautiful.
- 3 St. Jakobi. The Church of St. Jakobi was originally laid out as a hall church in the 14th century and later converted into a basilica. After the church was damaged by bombing during World War II, it is now mainly used for readings, exhibitions and concerts.
- 4 St. Nikolai. St. Nikolai is the oldest church in Stralsund. It was built from 1234 to 1279. At the beginning of the 14th century, the nave and the tower were demolished. After that, construction work began, which eventually led to a new nave and twin towers. The south tower is 102 m high, the high choir and the nave of the church come to a height of up to 29 m. St. Nikolai is located right next to the town hall and was the church of the rich and powerful - in other words: the councilors. The church was equipped with 56 altars, most of which were removed in the course of the Reformation in 1525. Nevertheless, the church is one of the most magnificent in Northern Europe. In the last few years, after extensive research, the interior was designed in the style of the 14th century; the colorful restoration has already taken place in a large part of the main nave. The astronomical clock behind the main altar is the oldest preserved in the Baltic region.Price: Admission: € 3 (renovation fee), free on Sundays and public holidays.
