The island Hiddensee (and at the same time also a community Hiddensee Island) is in the German Baltic Sea to the west to reprimand. It has been part of the West Rügen Office since 2005 Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. If you are looking for even more peace and quiet and want to really switch off from everyday stress, come to Hiddensee in winter. Then you can walk for hours on lonely beaches without meeting a soul. The island is also called Island of calm titled, among other things because it is almost car-free. It is also called by the locals Sötes Länneken, sweet country. The parish name Hiddensee Island refers directly to the name of the island and means something like "Island of Hedin" or "Hedin's Island". Both the flag and the coat of arms are typical of the island of Hiddensee: The seahorse symbolizes the silhouette of the island, the right side shows a house brand typical of Hiddensee.
On a tour through the places, however, it is noticeable that the island, which is so popular with tourists, has still not got rid of many eyesore from the GDR era even 30 years after the fall of the Wall.
The following places are located on the island, all of which belong to the municipality of Insel Hiddensee (from north to south):
- 1 Greaves is the oldest, smallest and northernmost district. It is located on a small bay and offers pure tranquility and idyll. Greaves does not have its own port. From here on one side you have a beautiful view of the lagoon landscape to the Altbessin peninsula, on the other side there is a fantastic view of the Dornbusch lighthouse. Both the old Bessin and the high bank path to the lighthouse can be easily explored from here on long hikes.
- The 1 Altbessin
belongs to a nature reserve as well as to Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. He is for visitors on a path to the southern tip with a four meter high 1 Observation tower walkable. Most of the land on the Altbessin is kept open through grazing (sheep, formerly also cattle). - The 2 Neubessin For the most part belongs to the core zone of the national park and may not be entered.

is the cultural center of the island due to the ideal combination of seaside resort, farming village, artist colony and holiday resort. A model of the former Cistercian monastery (1296-1536), which gave the place its name, is in the worth seeing Local museum. - 4 Neuendorf
is the younger part of the double village. Plogshagen, a little south of Neuendorf, is much older. Neuendorf is the southernmost place on Hiddensee. The inhabitants are therefore also referred to as "The South". The only paved road in the village leads from the harbor past the "Groot Partie" trap shed - today a museum café - and at the end of the village "Lütte Partie" -the fishing museum- to Vitte. From Neuendorf you can easily explore the south of the island on an approximately 8 km long hiking route. It goes past the wonderful fine sandy west beach and the Gellen lighthouse to the border of the national park. The way back runs over stone wall and dike through heather and meadow landscape to the harbor.

By plane
The journey to Hiddensee by airliner turns out to be quite problematic and time-consuming due to the distance to commercial airports.
- The airport is 160 km away 1 Rostock-Laage
(IATA: RLG) offers only a few scheduled flight connections. The Hamburg Airport is 320 km that Berlin Brandenburg Airport(IATA: BER) is over 340 km away. The Rügen airfield has a 900 m long asphalt runway and is approved for aircraft up to 5.7 t. It is ideally located in the center of the island for sports and business flyers. It is about 27 km to Schaprode. From there it goes on by boat.
By train

Ferries to Hiddensee
Ultimately, all variants of the journey lead across the water. Due to the location of the island there are different ways to do this. In addition to the ferry price, all passengers must use the Health resort tax Pay for the first day when buying the ticket. The Shipping company Hiddensee offers trips from various locations on the island. For overnight guests there are return tickets that are valid for up to 3 months (higher prices than for day return tickets; for tariffs, see the shipping company's website; tariff status 04/2019). Cheaper family cards are also on offer.
The short standard route 5 Schaprode (island of Ruegen) To Neuendorf (5 km as the crow flies, 30 minutes' drive) as well as to Vitte and Kloster, a day return ticket costs € 18.30, children 4-14 years: € 10.10. An additional 7.00 will be charged for taking bicycles with you.

By bicycle
- The Baltic Sea Cycle Route (EuroVelo 10) circles the entire island of Rügen and also leads through Stralsund and Schaprode.
- The Long-distance cycle route Hamburg – Rügen leads through Stralsund and over Putbus, BergenbisSassnitz to the island of Rügen. A detour takes you quickly to one of the ferry ports.

Hiddensee is one car-free island. Day guests and overnight guests have to leave their car on the mainland. Passenger traffic on the island is carried out on foot, by bicycle and also by horse-drawn vehicle. The use of e-scooters is also not permitted. These have to be left behind at the ferry. Due to the high cost of a day bike ticket for the ferries, it is cheaper to rent a bike on the island.

Northern tip with thorn bush
Dornbusch highlands: That is on the northern tip Landmark of the island, the lighthouse. He is enthroned on the 72 m high Bakenberg in the thorn bush. This chain of hills determines the landscape in the northern island area. A hiking trail with beautiful lake views leads along the steep coast. - History & Technical: The tower was built as a brick structure in 1887/1888. The light from the 29 m high structure shines up to 45 km over the Baltic Sea. The lighting apparatus consists of Fresnel lenses and one 2000 watt / 380 volt Metal halide lamp. The identifier is bright for 2.4 seconds and dark for 7.6 seconds. The viewing gallery is located at a height of 20 m or around 90 m above sea level.
- Incidentally, the building has already made it onto two postage stamps: in 1975 on a stamp of the GDR post and in 2009 on a stamp of the Deutsche Post (see also Wikipedia).
- Hiking tip: You have beautiful lake views from 2 Hochuferweg, which can be easily completed as a small round tour from the monastery. If you want, you can also descend to the beach via the Klausnertreppe and walk back down to the monastery.

From the monastery you can reach the northern tip with the Dornbusch. There are a few things to see in the village:
- 4 Island church. The brick building from the 14th century is the oldest building on the island. For centuries it served as a parish church for the island's residents. In 1781 it was rebuilt in the baroque style. The so-called Hiddenseer Rosenhimmel, the painted barrel vault, was not built until 1922. Gerhart Hauptmann is also buried in the cemetery.

- 6 Gerhart Hauptmann House. in the House Seedorn the writer Gerhart Hauptmann was a summer guest in 1926 before he bought it 4 years later and spent the summer months there with his wife. The museum was established in 1956 on the 10th anniversary of the poet's death. It shows a collection on the life and work of the writer. Gerhart Hauptmann's grave is located in the small island cemetery.Open: May-Oct: 11 am-5pm. Otherwise the house has very different opening times throughout the year.
- 7 Lietzenburg, Zum Hochland 13, 18565 Insel Hiddensee. Tel.: 49 (0)38300 608 60. The Art Nouveau villa, which is now a listed building, was built by the painter Oskar Kruse (1847–1919) in 1904/1905. He made his summer residence a popular hangout with other artists and writers. After 1949 the Lietzenburg came under state administration of the GDR. After the end of the GDR, the Lietzenburg was renovated in 2013 to make it suitable for historical monuments. Holiday apartments and a public area with a historic fireplace hall and the Kruse Atelier, in which events have been taking place again since autumn 2013, were created.
- 8 Eggert Gustavs Museum, Am Bau 12, 18565 Insel Hiddensee / Kloster. The private museum in the Alte Schmiede presents original works by the Hiddensee painter and graphic artist, wood carvings, printing plates, photo and film recordings as well as an exhibition on the history of the listed building. The tools, the forge and the transmission drill bear witness to the long tradition of blacksmithing on the island. In addition to a guided tour, painting courses for children are also offered.
Vitte
Vitte is the main town on the island. Here is the seat of the municipality, as well as the largest port of Hiddensee. There is always something going on. Pleasure boats bob around in the harbor, fishermen bring their catch ashore, several ferry lines unload their passengers or pick them up again. In the harbor area you can find not only the tourist information, but also some small shops and restaurants.

- 13 Windmill, Norderende, 18565 Hiddensee Island. The former windmill was shut down in 1927. The architect Helmut Trauzeile bought the mill in the early 1960s, restored it and converted it into a gerien apartment.

Neuendorf
- Thatched houses: The entire fishing village is a listed building. Its structural structure with houses in several rows on a meadow with no paths is considered unique. There is a rare ownership structure in Neuendorf. The houses of the residents belong to them as well as the land on which the houses stand. But only the area of the house is their property, as soon as you step out of the house you are on community property. Property boundaries, fences or hedges are therefore in vain. All houses stand on a large meadow. Efforts are currently (2019/2020) to also allocate the associated plots in private ownership.

- 18 Gellen lighthouse. The small lighthouse is 12.3 m high. The white steel tower with a red gallery and conical roof stands on a natural stone base on the northern border of the Gellen. The structure cannot be climbed, but it is a popular photo opportunity.
Southern tip with gells
The southern tip of Hiddensee is a valuable bird sanctuary. The area belongs to the core zone (protection zone I) of the national park and is therefore not accessible. From Neuendorf you can pass the lighthouse to the beginning of the protection zone at 3 reach. This is the end. The rest of the southern tip is reserved for nature.

Swimming
The island's 14 km long bathing beach is located on the west coast of Hiddensee. There are accesses from Klosters, Vitte and Neuendorf. A stronger wind often blows on the beach, which can generate quite high waves for the Baltic Sea. For water temperatures see section Practical advice. The beach sections in the villages are kept in a clean and well-tended condition. The main beach of Vitte has been awarded the "Blue Flag" rating, an international environmental symbol, since 2017. Part of the beach is also a natural beach. The natural bathing beach in the north of the island is about one 3 Steep staircase reachable. On the natural beach sections you have to expect algae, mussels and seaweed. A walk on the beach, combined with the search for amber, chicken gods and thunderbolts, is particularly promising here. The northern part of the island, with its varied landscape, is particularly ideal for hikes and walks. From the cliffs on the Dornbusch there are numerous beautiful lake views that can only be reached on foot. In the Dune heather Pay more attention to where you step, as this increases the Adder lives. The Hiddensee tourist information center and the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park Office offer guided hikes across the island.
To go biking
You can cycle well on the car-free island. Of course, the possibilities for cycling are somewhat limited due to the size of the island (island dimensions: 16.8 kilometers in length and widths between 250 m to 3.7 km). Large parts of the northern and southern tip of Hiddensee belong to the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Cycling is sometimes not permitted here.
But even with these restrictions it is worth using the bike on Hiddensee. There is one between the island villages of Kloster, Vitte and Neuendorf much-used means of transport. Renting a bike is not a problem. In total, you can get bicycles at 12 points on the island lend. The rental prices (starting from around € 6.50 / day) are interesting. Fishing is generally permitted in the coastal waters around Hiddensee, but some special regulations in the national park must be observed. Basically, for fishing with the hand line, there is an obligation to carry a valid fishing license with you. A temporary fishing license (tourist fishing license) and the additionally required fishing permit can be purchased at the tourist information offices in Vitte and Kloster.

The Hiddenseer kitchen essentially offers local home-style cooking with northern German characteristics. Special features are the freshly caught fish and numerous products made from the sea buckthorn, which is often found on Hiddensee (sea buckthorn liqueur, juice, cake, etc.).

Nachtleben
Die Insel Hiddensee ist seit jeher eine Familien- und Erholungsinsel. Wer das Nachtleben sucht, wird hier bestimmt nicht fündig. Dafür gibt es aber viel Ruhe und die Naturgeräusche des Meeres und der Vögel, die auch bei Nacht genossen werden können. Aufgrund des Fehlens störender Lichtquellen ist -insbesondere außerhalb der Ortschaften- der Blick zum Sternenhimmel ein seltenes Erlebnis. Dabei kann man auch sehr schön die wanderndern Lichtkegel der beiden Leuchttürme beobachten und auch die Lichter der im Norden der Insel vorbeifahrenden Schiffe verfolgen.

Kreuzotter und sonstige Schlangen in Sicht - Ruhe bewahren!
In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Kreuzotter , eine heimische, gefährdete Giftschlange besonders in der Dünenheide zwischen Vitte und Neuendorf vermehrt. Die Schlange ist an ihrem charakteristischen, dunklen, gezackten Rückenband meist relativ einfach zu erkennen. Daneben gibt es noch recht seltene, komplett schwarze Kreuzottern sowie rostbraune gezackte Exemplare.
Für Spaziergänge besonders in der Heide, den Dünen, aber auch sonstigen Naturgebieten der Insel daher am besten festes, geschlossenes Schuhwerk verwenden (optimal sind natürlich knöchelhohe Wanderschuhe). Beim Wandern verschwinden die kleinen Tiere in der Regel schon aufgrund der Bodenerschütterungen, bevor man sie sieht. Die wechselwarmen Reptilien (werden etwa 60 bis 80 cm lang) sonnen sich teilweise auch auf den Buhnen im Strandbereich. Also auch hier am besten genauer hinschauen wohin man tritt. Aber keine Panik: Die Tiere sind nicht angriffslustig. Ganz im Gegenteil: Sie versuchen zu verschwinden, sofern man sie lässt. Der Biss ist eine reine Verteidigungshandlung. Hierzu Information des Nationalparks Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft zu Kreuzotter. Wenn man sie nicht in die Enge treibt (z. B. versucht zu verjagen oder gar anfasst) besteht in der Regel keine Gefahr. Zum Teil merken manche Gebissene auch überhaupt nicht, dass sie Körperkontakt mit der Schlange hatten. Wird man gebissen, sollte man umgehend einen Arzt aufsuchen und den gebissenen Körperteil ruhig stellen. Keinesfalls versuchen das Gift auszusaugen und auszuspucken! Dadurch wird es evtl. erst recht gefährlich. Durch kleine Wunden im Mundbereich besteht die Gefahr, dass sich das Gift erst recht im Körper weiter verteilt. Für gesunde, erwachsene Menschen, die sich richtig verhalten, besteht in der Regel keine akute Lebensgefahr, da die Kreuzotter nur eine sehr geringe Menge Gift besitzt. Gefährlich wird es allerdings für Kinder und ältere, geschwächte Menschen.
Neben der Kreuzotter kommen auf Hiddensee noch die Ringelnatter (ungiftig) und die Schlingnatter (auch ungiftig) vor. Die Schlingnatter wird teilweise mit der Kreuzotter verwechselt. Sie besitzt auf ihrem Rücken ein paar Punkte. Ferner lebt auch die ungiftige Blindschleiche auf der Insel. Diese sieht zwar wie eine kleine Schlange aus, gehört aber zu den Echsen.
Gesundheit
Eine Rettungswache der Johanniter-Unfallhilfe im Hafen von Vitte ist mit einem modernen Rettungswagen ausgestattet. In dringenden Fällen werden Patienten mit einem Rettungshubschrauber von der Insel in ein Krankenhaus geflogen.
