The region around Wismar was definitely settled for a long time. But this did not play an important role during the time of the Germanic peoples before the migration, nor during the rule of the Abodrites. Only after the kingdom of the Abodrites was crushed by Heinrich the Lion in 1167 and the Duchy of Mecklenburg was founded, the city was founded here in a strategically favorable location.

The city, whose origins go back to the 12th century, received that in 1229 Schwerin, In 1266 the town charter of Lübeck and arrived in 1301 Mecklenburg. In the 13th century, Wismar joined the Hanseatic League and, although the plague killed around 10,000 people in 1376, became an important city. At the end of the 14th century, the town chronicles record Mr. Störtebecker's expulsion from the town. It is certain that this is the famous pirate. However, this does not prove the origin of the free robber from Wismar. Here, current research tends to focus more on the larger area Danzig. Legend has it that Till Eulenspiegel also worked here during this time. But from the 16th century the tide turned when the Hanseatic League lost its influence.

During the Thirty Years War, the city was captured by the Swedes on January 7, 1632. In the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the city was finally ceded to Sweden at the same time as the rule of Wismar, which comprised the Domanialämter Neukloster and Poel, which together had around 6,000 inhabitants. In 1675 the heavily fortified city was replaced by the Danes besieged and conquered by surrender, but reissued in 1678. In 1712 it was besieged again by the Danes, but in 1716 by the Danes, Prussians and Hanoverians, the occupation was forced to surrender due to hunger and the fortress was razed. In 1803 the entire rule of Wismar was from Sweden pledged in the pledge agreement from Malmö to Mecklenburg-Schwerin for 1,258,000 thalers for 100 years and taken under the estates of the state parliament in Malchin in 1828. The final return of Wismar to Mecklenburg was regulated in the Stockholm Treaty of June 20, 1903.

Churches

Nikolaikirche
  • 1  Marienkirche, St. Marien Kirchhof, 23966 Wismar. Tel.: 49 (0)3841 28 25 49. Marienkirche in the encyclopedia WikipediaMarienkirche in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsMarienkirche (Q1897884) in the Wikidata database. The 80 meter high tower can be seen from afar and therefore cannot be missed. This is rightly traded as a symbol of Wismar. The so-called Ratskirche stood here as early as the 13th century, and a huge church (twice as high and twice as wide) was built over it in the 14th century. The 80 meter high tower was initially crowned by a higher spire. This was destroyed during a hurricane and replaced by today's flatter one. Until the Second World War, this church was considered one of the most beautiful brick churches in northern Germany. During the Second World War it was badly damaged and, although it could be restored, it was blown up in 1960. Only the tower was left standing. A wall now draws the outlines of the former church again. At 12:00 noon, 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. the clockwork plays a carillon. In the lower part of the tower there is a small cinema in which an informative film about the construction of the church is shown in 3D, suitable for families. The performances take place every 20 minutes and last 10 minutes. There are also daily tower tours (every hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). You can register at the entrance. The tour is limited to 15 participants and is free. In 45 minutes you climb the 80 meter high tower and learn a lot about the city's history. Small windows give you the opportunity to take photos and enjoy the view. In the end, the guide is of course happy to receive a tip.Open: daily 10: 00-18: 00.

  • 3  George Church. Georgenkirche in the encyclopedia WikipediaGeorgenkirche in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsGeorgenkirche (Q1508738) in the Wikidata database. This monumental building is also based on a building from the 13th century. The church of the craftsmen and trade collectors was built over and changed several times in the following centuries until it was completed in 1594. It was actually planned to add a large tower here, but the city's star had already passed its zenith and a few decades later the Thirty Years War broke out. This church was also badly damaged in the Second World War, but unlike St. Mary's Church, it was not blown up, but only left to decay. On January 25, 1990, the gable of the north transept collapsed in a hurricane, destroying two adjacent houses. This was a wake-up call because this church has been restored since then. Donations totaling 40 million euros made the restoration of the building possible, which was completed by 2010. At the moment the restoration of frescoes or altar structures is in the foreground. A viewing platform has been built on the tower. The tour is free of charge between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A donation for further restoration work is always welcome.
  • 4  Nikolaikirche. Nikolaikirche in the encyclopedia WikipediaNikolaikirche in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsNikolaikirche (Q877183) in the Wikidata database. This 14th century church can be found in the northern part of the city center. It was considered the church of boatmen and sailors and is particularly impressive because of the 37 meter high central nave. This is the fourth highest in Germany. Only in Cologne, Ulm and Lübeck there is a higher central nave. Originally the tower had a slender spire. But this was also torn down by a storm in 1703. It fell on the nave and damaged it. The repairs were carried out in the baroque style. The church is accessible free of charge from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and, in addition to its size, shows parts of the original interior and many grave slabs with old inscriptions. In addition, a Gothic high altar retable from the 15th century can be seen here, which is the largest of its kind in the entire Baltic Sea area with 42 figures of saints on the front and 16 painting panels. This once stood in the Georgenkirche. After all restoration work has been completed, it should move back there.
  • 5  Holy Spirit Church. Holy Spirit Church in the Wikipedia encyclopediaHoly Spirit Church in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsHoly Spirit Church (Q1595126) in the Wikidata database. This rectangular Gothic style church was completed in the 15th century. A baroque ceiling painting was added to the interior in the 17th century. This shows scenes from the Old Testament and can still be viewed today. The north window contains valuable medieval stained glass from the destroyed St. Mary's Church. The so-called long house is located by the church. This was originally laid out as a hospital and was used as a retirement home for a long time.

Fürstenhof
  • 6  Fürstenhof. Fürstenhof in the encyclopedia WikipediaFürstenhof in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsFürstenhof (Q1483313) in the Wikidata database. This complex was originally built in 1512 as the residence of the Mecklenburg dukes. At first the courtyard consisted of a two-story building in the Gothic style, which was directly adjacent to the George Church. In 1553 the building was expanded to three floors and significantly enlarged. However, this structural measure was based on Italian models. The floors were separated by friezes and a richly decorated courtyard access was integrated. The friezes represent themes from the legends of the classical period and parables of the Bible. When the Swedes took over the city, the highest court of Swedes on the continent was established in the residence. Even during the GDR era, this was the seat of the district court. Today the district court of Wismar has its seat here.

Town hall in the encyclopedia WikipediaCity hall in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsCity Hall (Q2132634) in the Wikidata database. As early as 1319, a town hall was built here on the north side of the market square. However, this partially collapsed in 1807. On the remains of the old town hall, a new town hall in the classical style was built in 1819 according to plans by Ludwigslust court architect Georg Barca. This still contains the remains of the old town hall and is in excellent condition. The Gothic cellar vault, which houses a small museum about the city of Wismar, is particularly worth seeing. Unfortunately, the air quality in the vaulted cellar is not particularly good, so that this fact reduces the visit to the museum. The entrance to the museum is on the east side. Here a staircase leads to the vault. Entry is free.
