Schwerin is the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the smallest German state capital with fewer than 92,000 inhabitants. The urban area is characterized by the location on the water within the Schwerin lake landscape, the princely residence architecture and the extensive natural and park landscape. Schwerin is the cultural and political center of the region. Important sights include the Schwerin Castle with the castle garden, the old town, and cultural institutions such as the Schwerin State Museum or the Mecklenburg State Theater.

Map of Schwerin

Schwerin has been the lordly and political center of the region for more than 1000 years Mecklenburg. The castle was the residence of the Mecklenburg dukes and is now the seat of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The representative stately buildings that characterize the cityscape accommodate ministries and other state institutions, among other things. The magnificent prince's seat stands in contrast to the rural and agricultural villages and the extensive nature in the surrounding area.

In a 100-year-old travel guide it says: “Even if strangers are initially reluctant to meet North Germans and the friendly, agreeable manner is not immediately met with the South German and especially the Rhenish population, it is an old experience that strangers come to Schwerin I quickly felt at home, appreciated the North German style and left the place with a heavy heart. Everyone who was only able to stay here temporarily has kept a fond memory of the city and its residents. "

View from the cathedral to the market square with the town hall

The historical old city was able to expand mainly to the west due to its location on the numerous lakes and the swampy surroundings. The resulting districts each have their own individual architectural character and flair.

The area around the Gothic brick dome is called "the old town" in a narrower sense. It has grown since the Middle Ages and is dominated by half-timbered architecture and a medieval street scene. In the alleys of the old town you will find restaurants, cafés and mostly owner-managed boutiques. Gabled and town houses, the town hall in the Tudor Gothic style and the imposing columned building nestle around the old town market. City tours and walking tours start at the market square. The town hall also houses the tourist information. Numerous cafés are a magnet for visitors, especially in the summer months. We particularly recommend a visit to the regional weekly market, which takes place on Wednesdays in the old market square and on Wednesdays and Fridays at the directly adjacent butcher's market.

Other areas are the Schelfstadt and the Paulsstadt.

Residence ensemble SchwerinThe cityscape of Schwerin city center has been preserved as a window into the 19th century court. Everywhere in the state capital one encounters traces of the history of the rule of the Grand Dukes, which extends from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The focus is on Schwerin Castle, gardens and parks and the numerous buildings for the court and state administration. The almost completely preserved "cultural landscape of romantic historicism" was announced in June 2012 at the Conference of Ministers of Education as a candidate for inclusion in the German list of proposals (Tentative list) for the UNESCO World Heritage Site submitted. The residence ensemble includes the Schwerin Castle, the castle garden and the three churches (cathedral, Pauls and Schelfkirche) among others the following historical buildings in Schwerin:
