Near a monastery building in today's Broda district was in the middle of the 13th century. the city of Neubrandenburg was founded. The foundation letter of the city's founding by Johann I von Brandenburg dates from 1248. First a wooden defense system with palisades was built, around 1300 the first stone city gates were installed. The city came with the rule Stargard to Mecklenburg; After the city joined the Reformation in 1552 and secularized the monastery, Neubrandenburg was conquered in the Thirty Years' War in 1631, devastated and part of the population was killed. The city recovered only slowly and became in the 18th century. affected by major fires. When the citizens spoke out against becoming the seat of the newly founded part of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1701, it became obvious Neustrelitz to the royal seat. In 1747 the new baroque old town hall was built according to designs by court architect Julius Löwe, and from 1774 a ducal residential palace, the "Palais Neubrandenburg", was built on the market square.
Industrialization began only slowly, and in 1864 the city received a rail connection. After in the 19th century the old fortifications had been renovated, tourism experienced an upswing. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the city was captured by the Red Army without significant resistance, 80% of the historic buildings within the city wall ring were destroyed by fire from the Soviet conquerors, including the old town hall and the Neubrandenburg palace.
The reconstruction initially took place in a historicizing style in the style of socialist classicism, later modern buildings were erected without significant consideration of the old cityscape and the outskirts of Neubrandenburg became the location of the first large prefabricated housing estates in the GDR. From 1991 onwards, much of the city's building structure was renewed with the renovation of the theater and the reconstruction of the Marienkirche as a concert church; the high-rise building of the House of Culture and Education (HKB, built in 1965, renovated until 2014) remained in place.
