Neustrelitz is a city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is the former residence of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

background

As a Slavic settlement, probably the name comes from the Slavic meaning "place of archers", Strelitz already existed in the 13th century. The village was mentioned in a document around 1278, and in 1349 the town received town charter. The old Strelitz was an independent country town in the Middle Ages and, after the division, the capital of the partial duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, where Adolf Friedrich II was the first to rule.

After the fire of the old Strelitzer Residenzschloss in 1712, Adolf Friedrich III. For reasons of space, the new ducal residence palace built in 1726/31 in the Baroque style at the location of the Glienecke hunting lodge and adjoining it Neu-Strelitz founded as a new residential city. Alt-Strelitz lost its importance and was incorporated into Neustrelitz in 1931, heavily indebted after the global economic crisis.

In the 18th century the town of Neustrelitz was rebuilt as a planned baroque town within walking distance of the ducal residence palace. Eight streets lead from the round central market square, each at a 45-degree angle, which still characterize the cityscape today (especially from an aerial view). The residential palace was expanded in 1755 under Adolf Friedrich IV. To a three-wing baroque palace in the style of Palace of Versailles. The residential palace was largely destroyed by arson on April 29/30, 1945, the holdings of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz State Museum in the palace were partially looted, the stones were partially used as material for new buildings and the ruins of the palace were blown up and demolished in 1949/50. The palace park and the classicist monuments, including the Hebe (Luisen) temple, were preserved.

A relatively large Jewish community lived in the urban area of Strelitz, the Jewish population of Oll Mochum decreased from almost 25% around 1800 to 100 people, in 1914 the seat of the Jewish regional communities became after Neubrandenburg relocated and the synagogue was destroyed in the November program in 1938, only the Jewish cemetery remained.

Strelitzia reginae

The flower Strelitzia actually has something to do with (new) Strelitz: the Scot Francis Masson, sent by the British court to bring exotic plants from all over the world to London, sent an unknown plant to London in 1773, which was in honor of Queen Charlotte Strelitzia reginae was called. A perennial came to the ducal orangery in Neu-Strelitz and blossomed there for the first time in 1822. In 1995 the Strelitz was declared the city flower of Neustrelitz, and in 2008 a stainless steel sculpture of the Strelitz was erected in the palace garden.
