The Federal motorway 21 (BAB 21 or A 21) will be the Schleswig-Holstein State capital Kiel with the Bargteheide motorway junction on the Federal motorway 1 North-east of Hamburg connect and thus a second motorway connection between Hamburg and Kiel (in addition to the connection via the BAB 215 and the Federal motorway 7. It is currently in operation between junction 6 Nettelsee and Kreuz Bargteheide. The section south from Kiel to Nettelsee is currently still designated as federal highway 404, but between Klein Barkau and Nettelsee is being expanded to become a federal motorway, which should be completed in 2022. The motorway is currently in operation (2020) over a length of 56.2 km. Further construction to the south up Luneburg with connection to the Federal motorway 39 is planned. The planned connection to the Federal motorway 20 (Coastal highway) at Bad Segeberg has not yet been finally clarified. It is currently via the federal highway 206.
