Schleswig-Holstein is made up of the historical territories South Schleswig, Holstein, Duchy of Lauenburg (which once belonged to Oldenburg) and the Free and Hanseatic City Lübeck together.

The Eider as the border between Schleswig (as a Danish fiefdom) and Holstein (as a Roman-German fiefdom) was also the northern border of the Franconian Empire (since 811) and the Holy Roman Empire (German nation) until its fall in 1806, and the southern border of the Danish territory. The limit was also confirmed in the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Nevertheless, both areas were dynastically and culturally connected for many centuries, this connection is documented from 1386 at the latest. In the Treaty of Ripen in 1460 it was established that Holstein and Schleswig up forever untagged ("Forever undivided") should be. In the German-Danish War of 1864, Prussia conquered Schleswig, but the Jutian law (Jyske Lov) was still in force in Schleswig until 1900. After the First World War, a referendum took place in Schleswig, whereupon the northern part of Denmark was added, while southern Schleswig remained with Germany.

The Danish cultural influence sinks to the south, which is partly reflected to this day in the different versions of the Low German language and in the population of the Danish minority.

Historically, the Duchy of Lauenburg and the city do not belong to Schleswig or Holstein Lübeck. The latter was only incorporated into what was then the province of Schleswig-Holstein in 1937.
